1960 RR 40x60 THE WILD ONE
« on: November 04, 2014, 12:39:17 PM »
Did anyone else happen to catch "The Antiques Roadshow" last night?

Rudy Franchi appraised a 1960RR 40x60 for the Brando film, The Wild One last night. He gave the woman a valuation estimate of $3500-4K.

Does that seem in the ballpark? Neither HA nor emovie has sold the style she had, but emovie did sell another 60RR 40x60, in December of 2012, for $98.00.  http://www.emovieposter.com/agallery/archiveitem/6765728.html

The art on the woman's poster was a bit more simple in its design and featured more motorcycle imagery (all drawn--no photo art was used).

For those that can view this, the poster segment starts at 34:01 into the show:

I happen to agree with him more than disagree.  Maybe not $3500, but definitely >$1000 and maybe $2000-2500.  The Wild One is one of the quintessential biker movies... but there are basically NO motorcycles on any of the posters!  Here are some images for comparison:

1953 US 1-sheet -- Marlon in lipstick looking at disembodied feet?  WTF?

R1960 US 1-sheet -- Same as above with shittier colors, ugh.

R1960 US 40x60 -- Snooze.  Same, same.  At least it has slightly better colors...

R1960 US 30x40 -- Getting better I guess, at least there are motorcycles.  No Brando.  Looks like a bunch of cold (those scarves!) keystone cops...

R60s French 1p -- You can't even rely on the French, who usually knock them out of the park during this time period...

So what about the style B R60s from Antiques Roadshow?  WHOA!

Motorcycles -- check!
Brando -- check, although admittedly not his best representation given the normally crude format/art on these 40x60s
In signature hat, jacket, and jeans (before they were cool) -- check!
Ready to beat some ass with a goddamn crescent wrench -- double check!

Given the other options out there, this would definitely be THE poster I would want from this title.  The only thing that comes close is the later release UK quad, but that is photographic.

The art.. especially Brando... left little to be desired (for my eyes, that is)... but as Rudy said, it does feature the strong bike(r) imagery that wasnt seen or used previously.

I'm kinda shocked with that estimate as well.  It is a cool design, but the guy looks NOTHING like Brando.  I can't see this breaking 1k, but what do I know...

I'd much rather have the r60 40x60 emovie sold for 98 bucks.  Marlon is looking veeeeeery fine in that one, that's for sure.

$800ish maybe up to 1,500ish on a good day at heritage....or movieposterbid ;) Since it hasnt been seen at auction before, hell who knows could be $5,000 if two crazy guys or gals "had to have it."

Speaking on the art, it appeals to me much more than any other art for the original release or RR

I knew I'd seen this episode before - Premiere date: 01.03.2011

It's a nice looking poster.  I think Rudy might be a bit rich but the estimates on AR are usually somewhat inflated (it's TV afterall and usually insurance estimates).  Won't know for certain until a similar copy is sold...

What about the last item on this episode, Chris... that mobile being estimated at potentially a MILLION bucks???

Really?

I was flabergasted.

I saw that Calder mobile estimate and laughed. No matter how hot the mid century modern market may be, I just cant see anyone paying that. The lady had to hold on because she almost fell out.

With regards to that Wild One poster, I personally thought it was rather nice but in now way worth the estimate. I actually prefer that art to other Wild Ones posters I have seen, let alone posters that go for thousands...then again, what do I know?

she is so stupid when she says "I don't think I have ever seen a complete set"

and that's forgetting the silly estimate

I wonder what number Rudy Franchi would have put on the set?

And since 2013 (although this set was restored):

http://movieposters.ha.com/itm/science-fiction/the-day-the-earth-stood-still-20th-century-fox-1951-lobby-card-set-of-8-11-x-14-total-8-items-/a/7078-83168.s

These were also previously laminated ("resulting in surface paper loss")... so it makes one wonder how much restoration was done to this set.

Would love to see how they looked, post-laminate removal.
