Handwriting on back of posters
« on: June 15, 2010, 08:26:56 PM »
I'm completely fine with a dealer writing the names of posters on the back in pencil, but where I draw the line, pun intended, is when it's done with a pen! Pens show through to the front! Why is this so hard to understand dealers!

Chop-top, I think many posters that have writing on the back (especially in pen) are from theatres where employees have written the title.

This is probably particularly true on older posters and well before they became valuable collectors items.

I seriously doubt ANY contemporary dealer would be so foolish to write anything on the back of a poster...

Exception to this would probably be some of the dealers that just want to move paper at $10 - $20 on eBay.  Some offenders from France and Italy spring to mind.

I think it is sometimes great to see old handwriting on the backs of vintage posters.. maybe written by theater employees. We have often seen the handwritten titles, of course, or sometimes columns of numbers added up, (box office tallies maybe?), or even other misc written words or names. And if in pencil, all pretty harmless, as it most likely hasn't come thru to the front imagery.

This is just another small detail that helps to show the life some of these posters have lead along the way.  8)

Chris, didn't you know that I take out a Sharpie Magnum and cover the whole back of each poster I sell with writing concerning me as previous owner, the buyer's name as well as a synopsis of the film?

But don't worry. I'm sure it won't show up in slightly altered form on another forum. That's never happened.

We already have a thread about condoms? I guess i missed that screening.   ;D

And if you mean a handwriting thread, I just looked, and there is another that was started after this one was... and that was asking about how writing on the back might affect value.

I pulled out a couple Argentine OS.. and found some writing on the back of each... the first, done in ink pen.  :-\  Luckily it didn't bleed thru to the front:

The other, done in pencil, with the name of the movie (Interrupted Melody), the year, and Glenn Ford's name:

My Dr. Strangelove has 'Sleeping Beauty' written on the back in very large letters.  No, that is not a euphemism...

It's called editing, Charles.  :-*

As I was saying: Vinyl lettering attached to the back is a bit of a different beast than hand written material.. but all boils down to the same thing, at the end of the day. Nothing like re-purposing a poster for further use, with added lettering, simple notes, numbers or scribbles, as shown above.

Would be cool to see the vinyl lettering.

And as a little PS and reminder..... anyone can edit or delete their own posts for up to 6 hours after initially posting.

Paul.. this is the one I recalled and was referring to. So we have 3 related, yet slightly different threads, dealing with the backsides of posters.

You called me Jeffrey... so it seemed only right to return the formality.  :P

They could be, but with one thread dealing with value, and writing on the back, and the other 2 more just about "what has one found on the back," do you think it makes sense to combine em all? I can, tho, if that isn't an issue.  ;)
