Sorry, but those slow paced, sexist/racist John Wayne pictures are unwatchable, IMO.

Sexism and racism? What you talking bout Willis?

I think most of them just suck.

I really do think we should leave the bullshit and so fucking pretentious  pc at the door.

You haven't watched any then.

Not really pretentious to say that while other films in the past are guilty for sure, many of the Wayne material is very sexist and racist.

Maybe take a nap?

Huh?

So....you are offended about my take on a set of films that you readily agree 'suck'? K.

The western is a genre I REALLY want to love, but I always go into each film with the expectation that it will be a lot like Tombstone.... and then when they aren't I'm dissapointed.

I tried to watch the Man with No Name Trilogy recently and I just couldn't get into it... also, watched High Plains Drifter and was kind of confused/ uninterested.

I finally picked up Shane and High Noon; just haven't gotten a chance to watch them yet.

Unforgiven is amongst my favorites, but it's not what I imagine when I think of westerns... is that odd?

Also, I'm realy enjoying everyone's lists- it's actually incredible the amount of diversity amongst lists and there are def. some films I'm not familiar with that I will check out!

The problem with westerns, for me anyway, is that the bad ones are REALLY BAD.

Sorry, but those slow paced, sexist/racist John Wayne pictures are unwatchable, IMO.

I agree with your first sentence Ben. Bad westerns are really bad...

But I respectfully disagree with your second sentence.

I watch westerns. Let me mention just 3 Wayne films where you have just the opposite of sexism and racism:

Stagecoach: Ringo does more for equality and social inclusion than Yoda.

Man who shot liberty Valance: Racism? Tom Doniphon's best friend says it all about race and human relationships.

The Quiet Man: Sexism? Probably with the caveat that women, in particular Mary Kate Danaher run the show.  Sean Thornton can only do as he is told.

I believe Wayne had some "interesting" views. But his political views are a different conversation altogether.

Oh..did I just write a long post...?!  :P

Fair enough, appreciate the write up.

TCM had a bunch of Wayne films the other week and I watched several parts of several of them and to me, the full-on macho man/woman-make-me-a-sandwhich attitude was front and center. Really turned me off. I actually tuned in after talking to a couple friends of mine, both who work in film, one taught film theory...they feel the same way, and noted the extreme male chauvinist view in films like these.

Oh well. I'll be sure to report back that Zorba doesn't approve.

That's called History Ben, I know times have changed, sometimes not for the better, but I always try to watch films in the context of when they were made, and not by todays standards. Besides, I've know plenty of Women who like that "throw-down" they get from a Man's man... ;)

Well aware of history, social mores changing, etc...and I enjoy (usually) watching films from the context of when they were made and how they reflect society at that time.

This whole thing is blown out of proportion. Wayne films typically annoy me enough that I just stay away. IMO.

DOA has the cleverest script, one of the best endings and an incredible cast.  What a film.
