I had a cool pic of Jessica Rabbit glittering in the sunshine but can't find it.  Here's a few I could find:

The gold parts are extremely reflective, so I thought the Kilians were combination mylar/foils.  It appears to be a layer on mylar on top of foil but perhaps I'm wrong:

In the "sitting Jessica" in the upper left (in the hair) you can see a thin layer of gold that is not fully covered over by the red mylar(?).

Yeah, those are mylars,Mel.The mylar process uses mylar plastic and paint resulting in a heavier, thicker poster. No foil involved.Combination of paint and plastic makes for a very reflective poster, sometimes.Foil posters are extremely lightweight and thinner. You could breathe on it too hard and get a crinkle. :)
Foil is also a bit dull.It doesn't reflect as well as mylar.

I think out of the movie poster genre Superman and Dragonslayer would probably be my favs.Sadly, they didn't produce a lot of interesting foil,IMO.
My favorite foil, turns out, isn't a movie poster.Might have to drag it out cuz I can't find a pic.

My favorite foil. One of the "holy grails" of commercial foil.I had one in '76 but it didn't make it.Most back then suffered a cruel, crumpled death. :)  Not surprisingly, can be tough to find these crinkle free.As with most foils,if it's got a crinkle...put it to sleep.
Nowadays,in near mint shape, they sometimes can exceed $500.

Hmm - I had a look at the ehow link but it didn't really explain to me how the differences are manifested in posters.

I have some Bond posters that are ultra glossy, a Licence to Kill adv 1 Sheet, a Tomorrow Never Dies adv 1 Sheet with the (foil effect?) mirrored 007, and a World is not Enough adv 1 Sheet with the Flame Girl.

I also have a Saint adv 1 Sheet with the gold lightening strike.

Are these mylar?  Or foil?  And is the TND poster with the mirrored 007 possibly a combination of the two...?

Also, if a quick explanation of how the two mediums differ could be offered, I would really appreciate that.

Cheers all.

Thanks Rosa.I've always thought it was super coolio, too. :) Yeah,it's hard to see the effect in that pic.Unlike most foil posters,(where only a few parts are actually foil) this one kinda gives off a 'metallic' vibe throughout. It's definitely more vibrant than the paper versions printed the following years,as well. But yeah, one of those types that really has to be seen in person.

They're makeup is certainly one of a kind. ;)

The foil posters, usually, just give off a dull, metallic look.Because, honestly, that's what they are.A thin piece of metal foil on top a piece of paper.Shiny and reflective properties, like metal, but not a "complete" mirror effect.Mylar posters are much more reflective and vibrant. For the "vibrant" effect you can see it in The Jessica poster posted. For the "reflective" effect you see it in the Snow White Mirror and the Blow mylars. The more gold and silver the mylar is,the more "mirror like" it will appear. For foils posters that are completely foil, and have a chance to be mirror like, like the Elvis I posted, you just don't get that kind of mirror effect.

The OO7 in the TND is foil.So is the bolt in the Saint poster. That one came in gold or silver,I believe. The others are just high gloss.
