I am probably heading up to Cinevent this coming weekend in Columbus, OH. Heard many good things about the event and people who run it, and since I am like just over an hour away, I am not going to miss it again like I did last year. More info: http://www.cinevent.com/Check out this vid...and salivate over the dealer room pics! Boy oh boy, I could kill some time in that room... http://www.cinevent.com/images/CvCommercial.movAnyone going to be able to make it? Make the trip, have a beer (or several) on me.

Personally, I like collecting, but from a distance. Which is why forums are great. I have a few good friends on here, people I like and respect, but generally speaking, I don't like to mingle with the collecting world. I went to a few of these events, and it kind of freaked me out, not in a good way. No offense to anyone who loves these shows, but it was a little too... weird and obscure for me (if that makes any sense). Which is also why I will not go to Comic-Con anymore. I don't really associate with the crowd.
But have fun, Ben. Take pictures and share funny stories.

I was SO waiting for you to chime in, Rich. As I was typing my diatribe, I KNEW you'd be the first one to answer it. Actually, Comic Con and that thing I met you at are the two events I ever attended. Not for me, my friend. But I know YOU love it, so to each his bad taste. T

I went to this Manga/Anime (Suparnova) convention thing last year, my daughter wanted to go (and she even dressed up as some manga character), it was one of the weirdest things Ive been to, and Ive seen some weird things, but I had a ball, didn’t have a clue what 90% of it was about, but good fun anyway, the “Cosplay” comp was really fun to watch. I did manage to meet Dave Gibbons and get a copy of watchmen signed to me. I dunno, I found it freaky, but fun. Funny, someone thought I was in a costume, but didn’t know what, shame I wasn’t. Ahh well.

Dave, let's meet up and debate the hairy belt bootleg issue all over again! Ha.. Is this your first year getting a booth?
Thierry, not sure you can compare the endless hordes of Comic Con to a room with some crafts tables set up, covered in half sheets and lobbies...

It's just a fun Triumph/Conan clip, Benj. I don't imagine cinevent as a star wars bonanza.
I've been to poster exhibits but no shows yet. Not sure there is any in Dallas

Dallas is a great city, I actually lived there for a mere year...I was in 5th grade, attended White Rock Elementary, and had a crazy high batting average on my little league team (never made an out at the plate until my last game). I also saw Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade on opening day there and got the Pepsi Struzan poster and plastic Pepsi cup, I remember being nervous with excitement...the theater was all Indy and Batman...what a fun summer for an 11 year old. I saw the Ramses the Great Exhibit at the museum and had friends with weird names like Bleu, Keating, and Beau.
So there you go, my Dallas memories at random and for no reason...

Pics! Pics! Pics! Pics! Pics!
Looking froward to the pics, Ben. The fact you got the Pepsi Struzan poster and that plastic Pepsi cup is awesome beyond belief and even more awesome if you still have either. My older brother has near every special edition 7-11 Coke/Pepsi big gulp cup from his younger years between roughly 1980 to '92 as well as high school pep rally towels and countless foot ball cups. Talk about value being in the eyes of the beholder. 7-11 is a staple convenience store for those who don't know.

Ok, here is my Cinevent editorial, albeit from my limited view of being there for about 4.5 hours this past Saturday. Maybe a bit more info than you guys want, but its what I feel like writing. Due to the amount of info and pics I want to share, I will break it down into parts. Also, the pics aren't the best quality, had to use my droid's camera, sorry in advance. Enjoy. --- Part 1.Cinevent is held at the Ramada Plaza Hotel in Columbus, which is just north of downtown. Somewhat bad news for me, as I initially figured it was on the south side, making my trip from Cincinnati a bit longer than I anticipated, and when your little Honda Civic (wife has the nice car and is out of town) is void of air conditioning at random...well, that unanticipated and extra 30 minutes was extra sweltering hot in my car and I couldn't drive that fast because there were more cops than cows along the highway due to the holiday weekend...so I got there in just under 2 hours, nice and sweaty, smelling a bit like gasoline thanks to the semi exhaust. The hotel itself was tricky getting to, I swear Google maps eff it up off of main highways and heavy traffic roads. But I got there, and when I stepped out of the car and saw the entire lot full (literally packed) of cars and signs about the event, and I started to smile like an idiot and the excitement blew the memory of the hot trip into smithereens. Can't complain about wind making me deaf for 2 hours, as most folks on the forum couldn't get out this ways, so I felt particularly lucky and happy to scour endless tables and piles of these papers we love and fight over. Some guy walks to his car with a stack of lobbies wedged under one arm and an On Her Majesty's Secret Service half sheet under his other arm, as he fiddles for his keys. His wife is walking behind him loaded up with a few tubes, and I suddenly felt like Vince Vaughn in Swingers- "Dude, its SO ON!" Get into the main lobby, follow the directions from the hotel clerk who didn't seem that happy with all the movie nerds the staff had to cater to this weekend, and made my way down the stars to the ball room area. Had to register, a day pass is $15 to look at and talk about movie posters, etc...all day. Steal. $35 for all 4 days, can't beat it. As I was registering and talking to the nice girl behind the table, my senses were in overload. To the left is a hallway filled with people and dealers, one guy is screening an old 16mm Tom and Jerry cartoon on the damn wall, and the image was way too cool and vibrant for its own good. I hear the projectionist tell his friends he was going to put his "Citizen Kane print on after he got some water". Behind him is another room and I see literally stacks and stacks of film reels and posters lining the walls, yet I knew this wasn't THE room. I turn to my right and instantly the girl who was asking me questions I couldn't hear or answer is now out of luck because I see the pearly gates: (Might not seem like a big deal, stay with me here though, but I never get to be around many poster sources in person...my mining for gold is 99% online which is both too bland, lonely, and informal). Ok, so after you enter the room from this door, you turn to the right and see: (Sean L. of Platinum Posters there on the right in the blue shirt...his lobbies were ridiculous). Just past the door: Turn left to get a better lay of the land: I start to wonder it if was smart that I brought both a wad of cash and a brand new, fully stocked check book... ...to be continued...

Part 2Ok, so the first thing I did was walk around the convention, just soaking everything in. Here are some visuals to help you get a feel for my route, moving counter clockwise around the room, headed right from the previous pics. First pic here is of Sean's ridiculous array of lobbies...stuff that you see in Cinemasters/Heritage banner ads, stuff you are just happy seeing in person. Unfortunately, this is the worst picture in the world, and I swear it wasn't this blurry on the screen. I blew it, sorry about this, will bring a real camera next year, but I think you get the idea of the classic imagery on the wall behind him...wow. This table at the end of this side of the ball room was run by an extremely nice man, but his name escapes me right now. Had an extremely impressive series of binders filled with signed photos, stuff that was just incredible, and I could tell they were real (autos on pics used to be my thing before posters). He had great binders with lobbies that rivaled Sean's to a degree. Next to him on the left was Rich's booth (movieposterbid), and he was not there when I was taking pics, but more on Rich later. Rich's corner/wall/table in the background, stuff on table covered as he was at lunch. I came at a good time for low crowds because of the lunch hour, but several dealers were not there...at first. An about face from Rich's section. The room goes back a ways and curls to the left. A big ass "L" of movie paper in Columbus, OH. This guy had a great example of a Cool Hand Luke OS...just fantastic shape, not pictured, but Hitchock sure as heck is. Right across from Hitchcock guy was the table run by Peter Contarino of Majestic Posters, and what a set up he had. I went back there a few times for great conversations, and to make a couple purchases. More on Peter and Majestic later, but let it be said now that all adjectives to be used in reference to Majestic are nothing but glowing. Peter has this poster, I do not. This is one of the posters that really blew my mind...one of those "it looks better in person" pieces. Nobody instilled spirit in their films like Capra did, this one is no exception. The colors in this three sheet and the simple yet striking imagery of Cooper and Stanwyk is just both classic and gorgeous. If I had the loot, this bad boy would have made the trip home. Owner was Steve (sallypix on ebay). Steve also had this little ditty up on the wall, a never used NxNW sixer. Awesome, and I am a sucker for all things Hitch. Actually Steve had this line up of inserts and half sheets that would blow your mind, but yours truly dropped the ball in terms of pics for you all. If you were there, looking up at the three and six sheets in person, your mind may not work as sharp...give me a break. Halfway through the downstairs room...the other half in a bit...probably tomorrow morning. ...to be continued...
