That's a lot of money.
It was also a bargain.

It was one of two maltese falcons used in the film, except the maltese falcon that sold at Christie's in 1994 sold for $389,500.  Was the provenance really that much better on this one, or what else could be the reason for the significant difference in price realized?

the answer is: there are more billionaires, mega-millionaires and people who have a lowly 50mil out there than there were in 1994 (I think there were 3 billionaires then) and money means nothing to them, for good reason - if you have 500mil, the interest is accruing faster than you can spend it

in 1994, Bill Gates wasn't a billionaire and nobody knew who he was in the public eye at least. 20 years later, it's a different world

This is what happens when you measure wealth in fiat currencies over a long term range.

In the past five years the total assets on US bank books have risen by a paltry $2.1 trillion while over the same period, Chinese bank assets have exploded by an unprecedented $15.4 trillion hitting a gargantuan CNY147 trillion or an epic $24 trillion - some two and a half times the GDP of China!

Putting the rate of change in perspective, while the Fed was actively pumping $85 billion per month into US banks for a total of $1 trillion each year, in just the trailing 12 months ended September 30, 2013, Chinese bank assets grew by a mind-blowing $3.6 trillion!

The world is now fully addicted to about $5 trillion in annual liquidity creation between just the US, Japan and China alone! Throw in the ECB and BOE as many speculate will happen eventually, and it gets downright surreal.

When you have all the worlds currencies no longer tied to anything and are truly fiat then there should be no surprise that there are more trillion DOLLAR companies, billionaires, and millionaires than ever before.

Mine has been on my office shelf since I bought it on ebay about 10 years ago. I'm pretty sure it is a bootleg.  ;D

there was virtually no inflation for almost 100 years 1910. since then fiat has inflated, but money doesn't buy anything more in food than salaries did in 1900

A century ago, we spent more than half our money on food and clothes. Today, we spend more than half of our money on housing and transportation. Our ambitions turned from bread and shirts to ownership and highways.

I was watching the auction as it happened, and I must admit to my jaw hitting the floor when the auction Started at $1.5m.

It had until then been a fairly normal (for me) sort of auction.

Entertaining, nonetheless.
