So I now have both the 27x40 DS Grindhouse (presumably the "real" thing) and the 26x39 DS Grindhouse (presumably the fake or commercial (?)).

It is certainly POSSIBLE that the 40 is fake, so I can't guarantee this authentication.

Overall, the 39 is VERY GOOD.  If it were 27x40, it might very well pass as an original.  The texture of both seems identical, smooth and slightly glossy.  The image/photo quality appears very similar.  I would guess that the 39 is produced from a very high resolution scan of the original.

But there are differences:

(1) The 40 inch is obviously larger than the 39 inch.  Interesting that the "fake" just cuts off the edges - the image area is almost the same:

(2) The back of the 40 inch is lighter/whiter than the front but the 39 inch has mirror images:

(3) The 39 omits the "PRINTED IN USA" phrase:

(4) This poster recreates an old, beaten up, repaired/taped poster.  You can clearly see one of the "taped" sections on the 40 towards the bottom center but the 39 totally lacks it:

(5) The small text on the 40 is sharper/more solid than then small text on the 39.  However, the very small text on the 40 is also slightly fuzzy - not perfect like the old GAU logos:

(6) The 40 overall is yellower; the 39 is grayer/whiter.  However, the colors are NOT dramatically different:

If you have one or both of these, please add your thoughts to this thread.

Mel, just wanted to say I commend your efforts on several of these educational "real" vs. "fake" posts...

No doubt invaluable help for people interested in these posters.

I will third that.  Great job Mel, and stuff like this is why I am increasingly interested in Japanese material........because I have yet to receive what I even mildly suspect is a bootlegged B1 (that and the fact that I happen to reside in Japan).

Good work, Mel. I'm wondering who you got your 39" from, though I suspect I know. May we have the seller name?  Thanks.

Ha-ha, Carson, you're such a meddling kid, albeit with gender-identity issues!

Actually, it was not Egbert, as you are evidently implying, but I'm not going to reveal his/her identify b/c I don't want to embarrass him/her, especially since I ended up getting it for free and I have no doubt s/he thought it was real.  Now that I've seen it I know why.  Without having a 40 inch around for comparison and not checking the length,  I'm sure most sellers would think it's the real deal.  In fact, Carson  - you'll be surprised to hear this concession - but I think you're right that many of the Grindhouse posters on Ebay right now are probably the 39 inch.  So if you plan on buying it, ask the seller for the length.

If you've been following the "lost Apple 4GS fiasco," I'm sure you'll agree that you shouldn't embarrass someone without good cause.  As you'll see in this Gizmodo story, they inappropriately have revealed the identity of the Apple engineer who lost the phone and have ruined his career for no good reason.

Surprised to hear your concession I was correct about the reprints? No.

Surprised at times that you're actually allowed to practice law? Yes.

So if you plan on buying it, ask the seller for the length.

Thanks for the tip, Mel Hershenson  Wink
