How many unique pieces of advertisement amongst the 569,347 images?

And Bruce when do you think the database will be more fully updated? (Yes I know it is a lot of work and I am not trying to ungracious)
For example - when I punch in something like oh say "daybill" the newest results are usually only from 2003-2005 somewhere - that's 7 year's of missing data!

Hey Chris.. Just did a quick search and found this daybill, which sold in September 2011: http://www.emovieposter.com/agallery/archiveitem/4253089.html

Yes - it is very sporadic. If you enter the exact film title it certainly does work better. I just want the search term to work better and give me more results. As an experiment punch in "daybill" like I was saying and sort by date sold "newest first" - the results are clearly not a reflection of everything that has been sold

I am not exactly sure what you are saying here.
First off, are you aware that there is a 10,000 item return to any search? So if you search "daybill" then you can only see 10,000.
But if you set the sort to "Date Sold (Oldest First)" then you will see only the 10,000 oldest results.
If you then change it to "Price (High/Low)" you will see the 10,000 highest priced ones, regardless of year.
Now I DO notice that 2005 results do not have images, and I thought that we were pretty complete from 2004 up, so I will research that tomorrow.
Most images of online auction items from 1999 to 2003 are lost to the sands of time, and those will likely never be recaptured, but of course an awful lot of those have been later re-auctioned.
Now I realize you would like want to see EVERY daybill we ever sold in a single search, but that would add a lot of added expense to the database. Are you willing to pay for it, or can you accept its limitations and leave it free?
Or are you asking something else entirely?
Bruce

I don't know how easy that could be to calculate, and if it is expensive I would not be willing to undertake it (for idle curiosity) but I do know there are something like 40,000 different titles are represented, and at least 150,000 unique images,
But narrowing it down more than that is almost surely not worth the time, unless you will pay for the time it takes to do so, and then I will undertake it!

He'll pay for it, once he sells his metropolis daybill.

Here's what I mean Bruce - I search just "daybill" in the box and then sort by "newest first" (which means I should get the first 10,000 starting with the most recently sold and omitting the older ones (if you have actually auctioned 10,000+ daybills ) I get one result from 2012, several from 2011, a couple from 2010, none from 2009 or 2008, one from both 2007 and 2006 and then a whole crapload from 2005 and earlier (i.e. 2003 etc). Perhaps not all the results from 2005-2012 have been uploaded?

Need the database designers to get to a point where the same title can be grouped together. So Lost Boys single sided, US, one sheet only appears on the history 1 time, but sold 25 times with conditions notes and prices details when clicked upon. At least, that is what I would like to see

I know that a while ago we changed servers and the images had to be re-uploaded, but I thought that was complete. I will check it out tomorrow.
Dale, I would love a search like you describe, but it isn't cheap to create or maintain, and this database costs much and returns nothing. So until I start charging, you will have to live with its limitations.

OK, Chris, I found out the answer to the "missing" results. When you search for a specific title (something that will give ten or a few hundred or a few thousand results) you are seeing ALL the matches in the entire database. But when you search for "daybill" you only see the first 10,000 results (out of perhaps 25,000 or more). So the other 15,000 or more results are missing. When you search for anything, it starts the search at the beginning of the database, and once it hits 10,000 results, it just stops.
Why? Because general searches like "poster" or "lobby card" or whatever use a massive amount of the database's resources, and that slows it down a lot for everyone using it. By capping the results at 10,000 (which is certainly enough for all but the most general of searches) it keeps this from happening.
My guys think they may have found a new search they can upload to the database that WILL allow for more results without slowing down the search speed, but it will take a while to test it out, and we have other more pressing projects.
I saw the database when we took off the 10,000 result limitation, and it was very slow, and I know this choice is the lesser of two evils. Of course, I wish that we could have a state of the art search like Google, but that just costs too much.
Please keep asking any questions you may have, and I will certainly report back when I have any news about changes.
Bruce

Thanks for looking into this Bruce - but it still does not really explain why when I search "daybill" (as we have been discussing) and limit it to the most recent results, the search does not pull the 10,000 MOST RECENT sales results from the database.
Unless this comment "When you search for anything, it starts the search at the beginning of the database, and once it hits 10,000 results, it just stops." implies that the search is incapable of just grabbing the 10,000 most recent FIRST because there are more than 10,000 results?

Need order by sale date desc on the initial search launch, that should be an easy change if everything is stored in a relational database. Bruce is your site proprietary setup, so if someone else touches it they no longer will support it, just curious.
