HAUNTED GOLD ONE SHEET UNSULLIED
« Reply #102 on: January 08, 2014, 09:28:26 AM »
Once in a while we acquire an older poster that is really quite exceptional in terms of condition.  This example of HAUNTED GOLD was never backed - and it about as good as
it reasonably gets for a poster this old.  For the John Wayne condition-freak!  We are selling for $8000.

What is especially impressive about this fantastic poster is that it captures his likeness perfectly. After Wayne's bomb-out in The Big Trail, many of his 1930s posters showed a generic cowboy, as though the artists had no idea what he looked like, or thought the audience wouldn't care if it looked like him!

Starring with oneself is always stimulating -- !  but I think in this instance Duke was the horse.  Of course, Wayne became "The Duke" to many fans.  But this was later.

Actually, and surprisingly, the nickname pre-dates the horse, and it was from his dog!

John Wayne was born Marion Robert Morrison in Winterset, Iowa in 1907, but his parents soon decided they wanted Robert for their next son's name, and changed his middle name to Mitchell (one wonders if he would have been as big a star as "Marion Mitchell Morrison"!). His family moved to Glendale, California in 1911, and there he had a huge dog named Duke, and people started calling him that as well (and the nickname stuck, and he would later name his movie horse that, and eventually everyone would refer to him that way).

Ah, so!  Thanks for clarifying that.  I shouldn't make pronouncements without doing some digging.  I'm pretty sure the Lone Ranger's horse was SILVER.  Ha!

Actually I believe he was white...and his first horse was called Dusty.

CANNIBAL GIRLS.  Did anyone ever come up with a better title?  This got them into the drive-in in the seventies, I'll bet.   http://www.movieart.com/cannibal-girls-1973-671/

HOMER'S ODYSSEY (1911) L'ODISSEA
« Reply #116 on: February 01, 2014, 10:02:54 PM »
HOMER'S ODYSSEY (1911, released in the U.S.A. in 1912)  Half sheet.  L'ODISSEA (1911)

Incredibly early silent telling of The Odyssey.

An incredible ancient poster for a 1911 Italian film L'ODISSEA directed by Francesco Bertolini. Surprisingly the poster is in pretty nice condition. Here is certainly the first offering in cinema of a story that has been told and retold many times. Ulysses is played by Giuseppe de Liguoro. The film was distributed in America in February 1912 by the Monopol Film Company. Unlike many films from this early in the cinema's history, this movie still exists. In fact it was shown in London in 2013 and reported on at londoncitynights.com: "It turns out that Homer's Odyssey and modern CG blockbusters have more in common that you'd think. Michelakis entertainingly explains how the film was marketed. Notable tactics were; securing the recommendations of Classics academics in what are now the Ivy League universities; offering reprints copies of Homer's Odyssey (in English or Greek); an essay writing competition (which had 100,000 entries!); offering busts of Homer for cinema owners to display; and, brilliantly, offering university lecturers toga costumes to wear whilst delivering lectures about the film. Then for the US premiere they invited President Taft and former President Roosevelt, as well as the Deans of all the major US universities. Impressive stuff. All this effort suggests Homer's Odyssey as a summer tentpole blockbuster of its day; an early 'event film'." See more at: http://www.londoncitynights.com/2013/05/homers-odyssey-1911-directed-by.html#sthash.q2bevxHK.dpuf

An incredibly rare artifact from the first years of filming. You can even see this film by going to this url:

We are advertising this poster as the first release non-theatrical poster for PINK FLAMINGOS.  Of course there may have been hand-created or xeroxed posters for some early showings, but I believe this to be the first poster that was used for a wider non-theatrical distribution.  If anyone on the list has any information that would contradict this, would you please let me know.

PINK FLAMINGOS 11x17 non-theatrical distribution (16mm) poster.

We were told the below by a man who worked for New Line at this time:

"this is the very first poster created for this classic John Waters movie! At that time New Line Cinema only made odd-sized posters for its releases, and NO regular one-sheets. So if you want an original "Pink Flamingos" poster, this poster is your only option!"

What a great looking TC.

Incorporating those "modern" photographic portraits above the drawn artwork for the rest of the card!
