According to Knight Frank's Wealth Report, an index of the nine main collectibles markets grew 175% over the 10 years ended in the third quarter 2012 – a far better record than U.S. stocks, whose Standard & Poor's 500 index is up only about 40% for that period.

All nine categories tracked by Knight Frank increased in value except collectible furniture.

Classic cars were the top-performing collectible. Car prices surged 23% the 12 months ended in the third quarter of 2012, the report said; they racked up gains of 11% over five years and 395% over 10 years.

The big surprise was the number two collectible: coins. They don't get as much press as art or cars, but coins racked up even better gains the past year -- 25% -- and 248% gains over 10 years.

Stamps came in a close third, with nine 9% gains last year and 216% over 10 years. One of the kings of philately stamp collecting is Bill Gross, the PIMCO bond king, who put together one of the top stamp collections in the world and has sold off some of it in recent years.....

What a surprise - movie posters are not considered (but Chinese ceramics are!)

Ten or so years I worked in the rare coin and banknote industry, Aussie banknotes were number one, and coins number three, gotta realise though, we ain't taking small change, invest in anything affordable and you'll lose. Usually $10k up items only, and please don't go and buy modern issue coins, or I'll vomit ;)
