Watched The Maltese Falcon for the first time in ages.  Bogart was great, although I'd say overall the movie is a bit dated.  I laughed when Bogie punched out Peter Lorre WHILE SMOKING!

Considering the thread's title, which is the most handsome, in your opinion?

Lorre or Bogie?

Just a fact Jack that some of these "classics" haven't held up well.  Other than Bogart's performance, Maltese Falcon is not that great. Some of the acting is cringe-inducing, in fact.  Casablanca, by contrast, made just one year later (with many of the same cast members), remains exceptional.

The only questionable acting in it is by Astor - she's a bit over the top in certain scenes - but then again it was filmed almost as a stage play

The interplay between Bogart, Lorre, Greenstreet and even Elisha Cook Jr. is sublime in almost all respects...

^ Bogart. Lorre and Greenstreet. Same cast in Casablanca..

Agree that Astor is a bit over the top, and that's why this is not my favourite classic, and why I do get Mel's points. But i have to say that i always thought that the scrip is incredible with some of the best film noir lines. In fact, it has one of the BEST BOGART lines ever..

Astor: Oh you are God-send

Bogart:Oh, now don't overdo it (half smile on his face)

Oh boy... :-*

And more..
Sam Spade: People lose teeth talking like that. If you want to hang around, you'll be polite.

Sam Spade: [to Effie] You're a good man, sister.

Kasper Gutman: The best goodbyes are short. Adieu.

It does get me that people can't watch a film and remember what year it was made. They seem dated as they were made years ago…. Weather the film is good or bad is not a sign the film is dated. Frankenstein and Dracula are two of the most "dated" films I know. Technically they were miles behind other films made in the same year,  even some silent films are better produced than them.

Too many people watch old films and compere them by todays standards..  Not the thing to do.

^ A different point of view I guess. It doesn't bother me when people think some BW or older films are dated, as I do too think some have aged better than others. But that's just a matter of taste  :) Likewise,  I think some older films are far more avant-garde than newer films - to me that's nothing with being good or bad.  The Quiet Man - according to my friends is a dated and sexist film , you name it - Oh boy, he grabs her by the hair...she cooks, and cleans...  Yes, I can see their point. Do I care? Nope.

 :)

Huston just followed the dialogue from Hammett's book and that's why it works so well
