Dewey Law Firm International Film Poster Collection
« on: February 18, 2013, 05:50:10 PM »
Today I visited the Weschler auction offices to see the Dewey Law Firm international film collection that is being auctioned off. (The firm went bankrupt last year.)

Most of the collection consisted of jumbo-size DOUBLE panel French and Italian double panel posters.  My pictures do not capture the scale of these babies.

But anyway it was like visiting a movie poster museum!  You never see these monster posters framed.  I estimate each frame is worth $1,000 and the restoration must have been expensive as well.

According to the auction director, the collection was displayed at the firm's building.  The firm had an international clientele and the managing parter created and displayed the collection to attract international business clients.

Everything will be auctioned Friday morning by Weschler Auctions:

http://www.weschlers.com/asp/searchresults.asp?st=D&pg=1&ps=25&sale_no=1406

Although the posters are properly linen-backed (not mounted), it appears they are permanently framed, so although these will be great deals for locals, shipping would be prohibitive.

So without further ado, here are the pics I took:

By any chance, was the full name of that law firm "Dewey, Cheatem & Howe"?

Excellent post, Mel! Weschler's should be paying you a finder's fee -- because with all of your great pics/footage posted here, I'm sure they've hooked a few more hungry bidders!

Btw, I believe Thierry recently picked up that Antoine et Antoinette Frenchie 1p...and I myself snagged the Italian 2p of Next Stop Greenwich Village for a pittance on EMoviePoster!

Oh you mean that it mentions the posters are framed?

Yeah, that might rule out me bidding as I'm not going to pay for a huge framed piece to be sent to Australia.

Most of these are two meters tall and I'm sure they weigh at least 100 pounds or more, so it's primarily for locals and maybe some NYC dealers.  According to one article, some former employees of Dewey Lebeouf may bid on them as well.  Most of these posters are not super-rare, so you'd be better off buying them unframed somewhere else.

While if cheap I wouldn't complain, but the frames IMHO are dog ugly. Might suit modern posters for sci fi or action films or something.

ditto.  You might as well buy it but ask them to keep the frame. I do not think they are very common actually  :-[i can see a couple that i know have not been around laterly.  I am seriously considering calling them and ask them if i must take the frame...

i also found the lighting odd. It is too direct and close to the poster for my liking.  It damages the poster (as you all well know).

So true, Rosa. A good number of those early Italian 2-foglios and Swedish posters are not found every day.. not by a long shot.

Some do come up .. yet others can not make an appearance for years and years.  cheers

Well I talked to Weschler & Son, Inc and it seems the poster is sold with the frame and it is up to me to arrange for the shipping and request the shipper (or someone else) to dispose of the frame...

They couldnt even clarify what the asterix symbol next to the word 'Framed' in each auction item meant.

Too Hard...

I too emailed, enquiring about the frame issue, but also the description of one of the posters.

Their email confirmed that they just do the auction, she said they were framed in plexi so it is much lighter than glass. But they will not remove the frame and as per shipping without the frame it will be for you to sort it out.

In relation to my second enquire re info about the poster, the email suggested that they didn't know much about it asked me if I had any indicators about the original poster so they will check and revert.

Happy future owners, that's all I can say. I would have bought a couple....

You need to get Mel or somebody else local to be your agent.  Pay them in frames :)
