It's no secret that I typically loath remakes and cash-in sequels. However, you've piqued my interest... I'll try stay cautiously optimistic.

I like their concept (the story of what happened before the dog chase), and with Carpenter's blessing...  We shall see.

As much as I respect JC, his "blessings" don't mean much... I believe they were also given to the Halloween 1/2, Assault on Precinct 13, and Escape from New York (in progress) remakes!  I feel bad for him as the studios raid his back catalog... I'm sure his decision is either no and they do it without him, or (make a cross in the air) and at least he gets some input.

well since THE THING we are talking about is a remake in itself, based on a story, I kinda think, who cares? like it or not.

I was thinking the same thing.

I do hope turns out good though as I really like the 1982 version...

I like both versions, the original has that great Howard Hawks style of people tqalking over each other, as happens in real life, not in film or TV, its suspense is great, love it.
The remake, I like also, but for different reasons, the FX are still superb, its enjoyable,
I hope the 3rd telling is also entirely different, but equaly as good.

Fingers crossed.

Yeah, the 1951 original has never diminished. Still my favorite classic sci-fi.
Carpenter's 'remake' went back to the book. Loved it.
Maybe this new angle will strike a different nerve.
And hopefully it's not a hemorrhoid...

I love both versions of the film we now have. Carpenter's version does go towards the book more, but is still not an entirely faithful adaptation. Now what the new film is going to be is essentially an extrapolation of what goes on before the book material.

why bother?? why don't you just make your own story.. Oops.. that's what they're doing. But they tying it to the Thing just to get some milage and not for any truly artistic reasons

I'll probably see it at some point, like when it gets to the $3 DVD bin

Tonight (Sunday night), I had a Halloween party at home with about 35 guests.  Most were my wife's.  Now, being 32, she's slightly younger than me, enough so that I've actually seen Carpenter's The Thing in theaters when it came out, and she hasn't.  Anyhow, the movie was on TV, being Halloween and all.  And to my greatest surprise, since I consider the movie a classic, I realized that most of her friends had not seen it, and shocker of all shockers, had never heard of it.  Someone asked: "Isn't this supposed to be in black and white?"  It made me feel really old.

Sad

Happy Halloween.

Universal have bumped the release date back again to Oct 2011,,starting to get worried about this.
The leaked trailer on the web isnt too encouraging either..

I would really like this to be good, but I doubt it.

Anyone know what ever happened to Rob Bottin, never heard anything of him in years?

According to the imdb, Bottin's last makeup work was for 2002's MR DEEDS and, his most recent credit is 2008, where he appears in a SPFX makeup documentary http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1292039/

I re-watched the Carpenter version last weekend with a friend who had not seen it.  Man, this is good.

I like the fact that Mary Elizabeth Winstead takes over Kurt Russell's part.  From the look of it, it works.

We shall see.

Re-watched it myself last sunday. I am hoping for good things with this new one, the trailer looks fine. I know it won't be as good as Carpenters, but as long as it's in the ballpark.

I must say I'm with Ted re: the 51 version, I thought it was quite the ticket the first time I watched it, and still do on every showing. The last time being a week or so back...

It's one film that never gets old.
Seen it 100 times and I hope to see it 100 more.

Agreed, top film, the way Hawks (as he did in other films) gets the actors talking over each other, mAN it just adds so much to it, I can't imagine what it was like at the time of release.
