Organizing Movie Posters
« on: December 29, 2012, 02:04:06 PM »
So when I joined this forum I had never thought about organizing my posters.  I am now, as always, trying to organize my shit and thought that I could solicit input on ways to organize or label posters.  Kind of like a library has a dewey decimal system I thought we could battle out an APF movie poster classification system...

So the key location based descriptors are:

Country
Size
Year
Title

For example for the country code I had developed a generic numbering system.

1 - United States
2 - Australia
3 - Japanese
4 - French
5 - German
etc...

Then for size:

01 - One Sheet
02 - Half Sheet
03 - Insert
04 - 3 Sheet
05 - 6 Sheet
06 - Mini Small (11x17)
07 - Mini Medium
08 - Subway
09 - 24 Sheet
etc...

Australians:
01 - One Sheet
02 - Daybill

So a United States One Sheet would always have the code 101  But then I thought maybe by country codes:

1 - United States
61 - Australia
33 - France

Or combine the code representing the country and size into one.

A US OS would be 101 and a Daybill would be 612...

Then year:

Just four numbers of the original first release; '1966'

Title would be the first three letters and subsequent first letters; words such as 'a', 'the', 'to' omitted...

So for lets say Australian Daybill 'How to Steal A Million'

612.1966 HowSM

If it is a RR just add 'R75'.  If there are multiple versions 'A'

612.1966 HowSM R75 A

From that point forward the poster has a known code...

You could then add other information in parenthesis...

612.1966 HowSM (LB)

Now the consensus would have to be what the main search function should be...

If year then you could arrange the numbers in such a way to just get one number.

1966.612 Which tells you its an Australian Daybill for a film from 1966...  Add the 'HowSM' and more information.

Or you could go by Title

HowSM 1966.612 (LB)

Or determine all the movies from 1966 and develop a numerical code for that like the NSS...

Thoughts?

ENGINEER ALERT!

Holey moley, Charlie!

How about something simpler?

I use TITLE (YEAR OF ORIGINAL RELEASE, COUNTRY ABBREVIATION, SIZE, SINGLE/DOUBLE-SIDED, FOLDED/ROLLED) (ADDITIONAL INFO, ARTIST, ETC)

Examples:

- War Gods of Babylon, The (1963 Italy 1P SSF)

- Seven Year Itch, The (1955 France 1P SSF) (1970rr)

- Aeon Flux (2005 US 1S SSR) (Comic-Con release)

- Butch Cassidy (1969 Japan B2 SSF)

For series, I always identify the poster by series, then number:

- Superman 5 (Man of Steel)  (2012 US 1S DSR adv)

I'm also an engineer by training, so I appreciate your effort... but I agree with Mel.  Keep it simple.  The problem with 612 is that it doesn't mean anything without looking it up.  And you can have multiple meanings for the 2nd and 3rd digits depending on what the first digit is.  What a mess!

101.1966  vs.  USA.27x41.1966

Just use the 3-letter UN country abbreviation (http://unstats.un.org/unsd/methods/m49/m49alpha.htm), the size in inches (27x41), and the year.  Sure, it is 5 more characters than your coded system, but nearly anyone (yourself included) can understand it without an instruction manual.

I really was thinking a Decimal system...

Your nomenclature is fine but with a system in place each version of a poster could have a decimal or code.  It could also be used to find posters within a collection...  I am trying to develop a coding scheme so that I can process and store my posters... The other issue is whether or not to include storage such as Folded, Rolled, Unfolded.  So I would basically have four overall codes like the DDS.

1000 Rolled Section
2000 Folded Section
3000 Unfolded Section

So if I organized the unfolded posters by the CPDS (Charlie's Poster Decimal System) my backed HowSM would be (since I would rather go by size)

3612.1966 HowSM (LB)

Of which I could then label my flat files accordingly...

But then I have my own drawer for the linenbacked stuff so there could be an additional section for LB say 4000

4612.1966 HowSM

So I would go to my Linenbacked drawer and look for it...

So for a rolled Aeon Flux:

1101.2005 AeoF CC

OK then what we need to do is determine a coding system for size

I use OS; Mel uses 1S

Is DB ok for daybill?

aus.db.1966 HowSM (LB)

I guess in a weird way one of my goals was not to just develop something for my stuff, but something everyone could use...  Why use something different than a standard. I wouldn't open a library and sort by title...

I use DB for Double bill...

When I had mine listed, they were in order of country, and within that group size, and alphabetical. Followed by the date of release, and condition grade.  So easy to look through.

I use 1S (one sheet), 3S (three sheet), 6S (six sheet), 1P (one panel), 2P (two panel), etc.

Charlie, I don't see any implementation of the universally accepted 5-Star rating system.

Personally, I keep records in excel.  Each field is separate column and storage location is simply a numbered box or tube.

Have fields for title, year, size, NSS number, folded/rolled, card #s for LCS, double sided, location and notes.  Can select and sort on any of them.
Since 90% of my stuff is US, I just keep country or origin in the notes, but it would be simple to add a column.  I see no point in coming up with a coding number.  If you want universal coding, simply agree on the order of these fields and convert to a CSV output (comma separated values)

Example:
"Bandwagon The",1/2-sh,,1953,Good,53/404,Rolled,framed on wall,Style B. Tear on top/taped.  Sm tear on btm.
(for some reason the site kept rejecting the post until I reformatted)

Oh yeah, the fields are Title, Size, LC #(s), Year, Condition, NSS #, Rolled/Folded, Location, Notes

What do you abbreviate a french medium or a french petite with 2 characters?  Or the french slim from the 50s/60s?  Or Italian locandinas, photobustas, double bustas, etc...?  Or a UK quad (technically it should be QC)?  Point being, there will always be something that doesn't fit the mold.

As tempting as it may be, I still think a purely numerical code is going to be more trouble than it's worth...

I totally understand Mel.  But one other advantage of a number system is being able to sort pictures by number.  So if I do the number system and then hit sort all the posters will sort by country, size, and then title...

You don't need numerical digits for that... as long as the title comes last the posters will be grouped by your other criteria -- year (which I personally would want first), country, size, title, etc...

Again, if you categorize into a coma separated values list, you can import into a spreadsheet and then sort and select by any darned criteria you like.  Why are you trying so hard to make this complicated?

Keep it simple.

Organise your collection into two piles - if it's not in Pile #1 then it is sure to be in pile #2.
