I want this:

Y'know, I nearly had that face mask.
Back when the film premiered on VHS, I was at the VSDA show in Las Vegas and they wheeled Hopkins in with the mask on.
When he took it off, it was laid on a table while we interviewed him.
I was within arm's reach of it and I couldn't take my eyes off it.
I thought for a second about smuggling it out in my jacket, but my conscience got the better of me.

What an awesome photo.  You should post that in the "behind the scenes" thread too.

Sadly, if that suit was latex I bet is turned to dust by now...

I wonder how many suits were made over the years for the different movies?

And think of the strain, wear and tear, too, from all the fighting/battling sequences, or even just the actor's movement. Tough on rubber, no matter how thick it was originally cast and molded.

Would be so cool if this had been kept and even tried to be preserved somewhere. Even if the head was around, as at least some part was kept for film posterity (if the filmmakers even considered that).    ;)

didn't see this thread before, but the answer to how many suits were made is that there was a new suit made for each Godzilla film, with the exception of Ghidrah the Three Headed Monster (it was filmed only a few months after Godzilla vs. the Thing and slight repairs were made to that suit for filming).

Unfortunately, at that time, Toho didn't properly care for any of the suits after filming and it is pretty well documented that they would keep some in a storage shed and what didn't fit in there was left outside the shed to rot in the weather.  The head of Godzilla from the 1966 film, Godzilla vs. the Sea Monster still survives, as well as a complete outfit of MechaGodzilla from Terror of MechaGodzilla, and thankfully many smaller puppets and props (including spaceships, guns, military vehicles, and the like) from the Showa era still survive.
For the 90s and newer films, an effort is made to save the heads from a majority of the costumes and recasts from suit molds are made of stronger materials for some of the museum displays that Toho helps sponsor.

Thanks for the info, Sean.

Man, that photo you posted almost looks like a slaughterhouse pic. Godzilla ready to be bled and then cut into steaks and chops.  :'(

What a shame (but like so many cases) where costumes and props from flicks were not properly stored or cared for, because, like any new movie (which hasnt reached some status yet, financially, or as a hit with audiences), the items are sometimes carelessly stored on a shelf, in a box or, in this case, in the outdoor elements, only to be lost to them. The costumes/props are not seen as iconic or worthy of saving, at the time of a film's actual production.

And props are often cheaply made. They look good on film, but their construction is often made with lesser materials, like foam, lightweight wood, etc, but then finished to look like metal, marble, oak, etc.

I'm with Simon, but I would go for the original OO7 long barreled gun. Little did kids of the 60's know it was just a pellet gun!

Lon Chaney Sr's mask that he wore in THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA, or his complete Red Death costume, along with the skull topped & snake staff that he walked down the opera staircase with, during the color Bal Masque sequence.  bed1
