There are so many great artists out there -- past and present -- but, I'd have to say my favorite would be Karoly Grosz, the genius behind many of the Universal horror classics, including my full-size replica of the original MUMMY...

And Paul and Zorba, here's my Australian STAR TREK III by Peak...

Hi, Folks!

The poster artwork which is used on the front cover of the excellent ART OF HAMMER book is taken from the Italian poster for DRACULA AD1972 and is credited to Renato Casaro.

The actual signature on the poster is very clearly 'B CASARO' ... does anyone know why this is the case?  We have just acquired an example of this very attractive poster, so I have been able to examine it at clsoe quarters and it's not just a carelessly written letter 'R' - it's a very clear 'B' ... any ideas?

Thanks for any assistance.

Best wishes,

Terry - www.quadbod.co.uk

Hey Terry, I was looking at a number of the great closeup images on Ed's Filmonpaper site, showing Casaro's signature. I think your first hunch is correct that this was more a quickly written signature, along with the offset printing, resulting in the more "B-looking" letter "R."

When looking at the art style, is certainly looks to be Casaro (imo). Here's a C/U, borrowed from Ed's site, (thanks Ed!!) for the '78RR German poster Casaro did, for For A Few Dollars More.

Here too, the printing quality makes the letter R look a bit mushy.

His sig became more neat and block like, it seems, too, as the years went on.

Ed, what do you think, when you look at the name on the Dracula piece?

As Jeff says I'm also convinced it's just been hastily written and the dot to the bottom right of the 'B' is actually the end of the downward stroke of a capital 'R'. It's 100% definitely Renato's work so I can only assume he either rushed his signature for that painting or it just didn't print very well.
