Tron sequel looks cool.  Hard to believe the original came out almost 30 YEARS AGO! The visuals of the original still hold up pretty well. These are pics from the new movie:

I am probably in the top 20% of TRON nerds.

I am very excited about this movie.  Much more excited than just about anything that has come out in about, oh, 10 years.  I truly hope I'm not disappointed.

I saw the bootleg trailer about a year ago (ish) and it looked great.  Now the question is if they can make a halfway decent story out of it.

There was an advance 1s at the theater this weekend.  I am in the market for one so off to the WT thread I go...

Finally saw Alice at IMAX Webb Chapel yesterday.

Here is the TRON trailer they should have shown and one of the best trailers I've ever seen.

Check it out: TRON VFX Concept Test

That's the same one they showed at the Comic-Con last year.  Apparently this is not even from the movie, but really was just a test.  At that point they had a very limited team working on the effects whereas now it's likely a cast of thousands working away.

The trailer on IMAX 3D was really just a teaser showing just a little of the look of the movie and introducing the protagonist.  I suppose they had to do that.

I got a ticket to the Tron preview in Rotterdam this week.  They're showing 23 minutes of the film in IMAX 3D.

Will report out afterward.

I suspect they're going to show the whole film at one of these sneak previews, like they did with the Star Trek reboot.

Has anybody seen the South Park episode "You Have 0 Friends" about Facebook with a twist of Tron?  Another epic recent South Park episode is called "Insheeption" and it has a twist on hoarding.  I saw both within the last few days and they were pretty awesome.

So... late report out on the "Tron Night" preview.

It was indeed only 23 minutes of footage.  Probably 30-40% of that was dedicated to footage "off the grid" (pre-digi-resolution into "Tron world") so that we could be introduced to the character of Sam Flynn and what had happened to dear old Dad.  We see he is angry and a renegade, and that he rides a motorbike very well.  Hmmm... I wonder if that will come in handy later?  I thought this part was a big waste since everyone there was a hardcore Tron fan and I'm 99% sure we all knew exactly who this guy is and that Dad/Dude had disappeared many years previous.

OK, so he's sucked into Tron world and they didn't show that actually happening, which was good.  Keep that for the movie.

They showed clips from when he gets picked up by a Recognizer (the big red robo-ship things), put into his Tron-world-suit by white-suited hot babes with laser-fingers, sent into a 'discs of Tron' session, driven 'off the grid' by Quorra (Olivia Wilde) to see Dad (who is meditating in a reverse white raindrop force-field-ish area when we see him for the first time), a little bit of reunion time with an old and spaced out Jeff Bridges, a little bit of light cycles, etc.

The effects look great, very slick.  But this is expected; we are now in an era where there is relatively little limit as to what can be created, especially in a world that is intended to look digital.  I do hope that there is not too much reliance on effects and how much digital "stuff" they can think up (I think I remember in a clip the concept of "light-jets".  This to me is pushing it, but I have my own mania to blame I suppose.).  I think one of the reasons that the original Tron looked so good was because the computing power put limits on what could be done, and thus forced creativity and dare I say elegance.

I am also concerned about the choice of director.  Why couldn't they have chosen an experienced director for this?  His resume looks short on feature films, and what I saw didn't make me hopeful.  The acting was, er, wooden in several scenes.  And I understand he's an architect(?) and graphic novel artist, and that shows, but that didn't help in some scenes from it looking very flat.

Well, anyway, I don't know much about this guy Joseph Kosinski and I truly hope it looks better as a whole picture rather than clips.  What I saw gave me not such a great feeling that this will be a series of very pretty 3D animation shots with wooden acting and scenes that look good laid out in a storyboard but have zero tension.

I hope I am very seriously incorrect in my assessment based on the 15% of the movie that we saw.

Prediction:  Joseph Kosinski is going to ride the Tron hype wave through a couple more studio budget-busters and then disappear back into graphic novel - land.

Hey, man. I think your assessment might (unfortunately) be spot on...
The effects look cool...but the story and acting are gonna be KEY....

If you're REALLY into Tron Legacy, you can get a 27x39 glow in the dark soundtrack poster if you buy the CD for $39:

And here's a printer's proof:

saw it yesterday morning at a press screening, very good effects and the story isn't too bad either. I enjoyed it.
