Anyone here own any original Ancient Egyptian Antiquities?
« on: June 10, 2012, 08:44:49 PM »
I was curious if anyone here owns any original artifacts of Ancient Egypt?

I know there are a lot of fakes passed off as originals so I know it can be difficult to obtain actual originals. I also know everything brought out of Egypt in the past few decades is no good because you cannot take original artifacts out if Egypt anymore (I think anything exported before 1922 was allowed).

I am wondering where people get original artifacts that can be trusted 100%. I am asking this question because I would love to buy Ancient Egyptian artifacts. I am also curious to learn what fellow members here have.

I have searched the Internet and seen items for sale but I have no idea how legit they are, if the companies can be trusted and if the artifacts are priced fairly or highly overpriced.

Thank you for any replies,
Juli

Juli - I don't have anything because of 3 reasons:

1) As a trained anthropologist/archaeologist the illicit antiquities trade is a huge problem - buying antiquities without a known provenance/legality only supports the trade which destroys the history of mankind

2) Even if an artifact is allowed to be sold (usually this means taken out of Egypt prior to 1900 or before - there is an exact date but I don't have it in front of me) expect to pay boatloads of $$$ because the supply of legitimate, authentic, salable artifacts is an extremely finite and thus competitive

3) The trouble with fake pieces - just about ANYTHING on eBay is almost certainly fake - REAL Egyption antiquities if purchased at a reputable auction house with known provenance etc will, again, be prohibitively expensive

I am willing to save up and pay big money if I know an artifact is 100% legit with provenance. I am just wondering how much would it likely cost? Would it be millions or more in a range I could someday actually afford something (such as a few thousand)? I am looking to buy something small but nice like a scarab. I know some artifacts would bring millions but maybe a scarab might be less expensive?

Oh you could definitely get something authentic in the thousands.  It will be a late period piece (i.e. circa 500 BC) likely.  Anything from a famous pharaoh would be astronomical...

Best thing to do would be to check out Sotheby's and Christies...

I'm sorry, but I just don't believe it.

My was over in Egypt about a year ago, and brought me back this 100% authentic ancient Egyptian map:

Do you really want to try and tell me that this is a fake or reproduction? I don't think so. It has a picture of a pharaoh AND the pyramids on it for christ's sake.

I know. Plus it's made out of some ancient rare earth metal that lets it stick on my refrigerator. I tell you, those ancient Egyptians had some advanced technology. I never knew they had refrigerators back then.

The other amazing aspect of it is that it's written in English!  This will definitely throw Egyptology into complete turmoil...

Seems to be true:

Though I guess it was an attack in Taiwan not Australia (though it was a .au site).

Guess it wasn't very hungry as it should have swallowed that arm quickly.

The fact it was sick likely explains why it attacked him...
