Any Brits remember this....
« on: June 03, 2012, 02:42:37 PM »
I know I'm old, but wondered if any of the British fellows remember this....

This one was my Brothers, mine is up there some where, but I need about 6 months off work to sort that loft out. Maybe it's time to retire.... :D

My parents and us kids lived in Portsmouth at the time, Leeds were my first division team of choice. Although they didn't win it in 1970 the went on to win in '72. I still have (somewhere) a petrol station(?) giveaway of a FA Cup promotion where you collected a coin for each team in the Cup tourney culminating in a very large coin given away of the winning team, it all went together in a glossy magazine/folder. Pretty cool - no idea where it is, might be nice to try and find it...

I have them complete IN the folder - just not sure where the folder is!

It was Esso who were the promoters, "bom, bom, bom, bom, Esso Blue" (how's my memory?!) I found the collection noted here: http://cards.littleoak.com.au/index_esso.html and also it is in the foreground of the picture for this auction here http://www.liveauctioneers.com/item/5773036

Must look for it...might be a trade to be had for a quad or two...

Jollygood memory David, those days were great for us as kids. You always wanted your parents to full up with petrol, so you could get another give-a-way for your collection of, usually football something....

What's strange is, we lived not far from British Steel, and at the end of that coin promotion, there was piles of the coins waiting to be melted down. So there may well be less of these about than we think!

Looooong time ago, weird things we remember huh? I remember we were leaving a week after the '72 final to head back to NZ and I hounded my Dad to get me the winner's coin - in the end I had to trade with a friend Marc Saunders, who had two (gawd how'd I remember that name?).

I see those coins on eBay for about $1Pound - so the memory of that collection is worth a lot more I think

Had a Google for the house we lived in, 23 Bedhampton Rd, Portsmouth - don't really remember it but I could see from the satellite view a big graveyard not far from there that all us kids of the neighbourhood used to walk thru to go to the fields to play football on a Sunday afternoon. Not so much of a big deal except after play we used to walk back thru it, and it was dusk...geepers we used to try and scare the crap out of each other as we walked thru that place, and usually succeeded!

I'm pretty sure the tiger was used in the UK too, IIRC...

Wasn't there a tiger used to promote Frosties in the UK too?

In the western US, the stations were labelled DX.  We had one DX station in Colorado that had a VW bug painted in orange and black stripes, complete with a long tail that stood straight up.  They used it as a service car.

I did find these in a packet of Frosties, or was it Sugar puffs, back in the late 60's...
