Looking for foreign money
« on: May 20, 2012, 11:19:02 AM »
I am looking for foreign money. If you have any (bills or coins) please let me know what you have and if I am interested in anything I will make you an offer. I am most interested in money from Greece, Israel, Italy, Egypt, and Peru but I am interested in anything you may have. Please send me a list if you have anything you are willing to sell.

Thanks,
Juli

Wow, that reminded me I've got an old collection of coins that has been passed down for a few generations...first time I have looked at it tonight in 20 years. Had a quick look through and some of the cool things I found (cool to me) some oldish some not so...

1 Schilling, 1726 (Hamburg)
Farthing, 1905
Halfpenny, 1924, 34, 35
Something from 1798
1F, French Polynesia 1945
NZ Half Crowns, 1934, 48, 49, 51,
One Penny 1916, 20, 21, 44
USA Quarter Dollar 1943, 73

And a very cool Stirling silver USA medallion for something called Operation Deepfreeze II 57/58.

Plus another hundred or so - must get them valued...

Don't get your hopes up re value (worked at a coin dealers for 10+ years), if you think poster collectors are fussy, wait until you see how value is affected by coins EXACT condition (that and the fact there is so darn many of them)

if your half penny was 1923 and australian you'd be laughing though.

So I see, had a quick look at a couple of items, 1726 Schilling? I thought yeah baby...but nope - looking like it does maybe worth $20Euro - still, it's very cool because it is nearly 300 years old and looks like this: http://www.ma-shops.com/gaebler/item.php5?id=5628

But I guess given the number of coins ever in circulation the value of coins is relative.

Oh well, put them away for another 20 years.  :)

coins need to be rare (which usually they aren't) or in exceptional condition (or both).
We saw literally dozens of collections (that sound like this) each FORTNIGHT or week, or day even,
I was constantly disappointing people who thought they had hit jack pot with coin 100, 200 300 years old etc, and they usually thought I was trying to rip them off. My standard comeback was to try and sell them a coin about as old as christ for $20.

There are rare dates, so don't give up, but its like winning lottery.

AND some of these will have silver content and are traded daily for silver bullion.

Your Schilling may be worth even less depending on the exact grade, the high points of the coin get smoothed/worn down.

One thing, dont ever clean a coin.

Good luck and feel free to ask me if you like. I am no expert in world coins (mainly dealt in Aussie coins and banknotes, and bullion), but understand the field.

Or can steer you to the right dealer if there's something worth checking out.

Sad to say cant even see any silver in there.
I do see an Aussie 20c piece, put it towards one of my daybills ;)

This is probably wallet crumbs from a traveler.

Best thing is either keep them if they are special, OR give them to a kid you may know, they love them to look at, take to school, and might start the collecting bug.

There's a 1947 shilling, I thought that was the last year of silver in those coins...

Just my luck, I thought I'd have at least enough for a Dracula Quad... ;D

I love that line!

I appreciate that, thanks. There's probably a couple of hundred in the collection and on the surface of it it looks like not worth the effort of sorting through, even at $5 each average (if I was lucky). So I might as well shove it in a drawer and give it to the kids to fight over after I am gone!

USA Quarter Dollar 1943

This one is 90% silver so it's worth about $5 melt.

It depends on the condition
