Chinese Cultural Revolution Posters
« on: April 29, 2012, 01:36:19 AM »
I might be stretching it, they are of course propaganda posters, but what is advertising?

Feel free to move, but stuffed if I know where.

I have a lot of these, the following are the smaller than 1 sheet size ones, most around the size of belgians. But the wood blocks are smaller than lobby cards.

I spent a good couple of years getting these authenticated. There are a LOT on ebay and as far as I can gather all (99%) fakes. Speaking to a chinese friend, he said that they really couldn't give a shit and find it funny that westerners would want anything like it, and so fake or real, no big deal.

I have fiund most of the ebay sellers, if pressed for a while via email they admit they MIGHT NOT be real. ha.

Anyways I got these (and MANY MORE, larger ones images to come later) from the same friend as above, we worked together for 10 years, a very nice man. He was born in Harbin, China. And later came to Australia. He goes there often. One trip he found these in Harbin. And bought them back for me. He was sure they were legit, they came from a family member and they had no reason to lie (they gave to him).

He knew I had an interest in the Cultural revolution, and he knew I collected paper, so he bought them back for me, even though he thought they were rubbish.

I had never seen them in person, and I didn't wanted to learn how to spot fakes, which turned out to be a nightmare I never want to go back into.. Movie poster collectors have it lucky.

Anyways, eventually I made friends with a guy in Sweden who is head of the field, and between my eyes, hands, nose and his expertise, he guaranteed to me they were legit. Also some may remember MRS BIG FAT ARSE, she has handled these in person and agrees (she knows her shit).

Anyways long story for posters that maybe only I like (although I seem to recall Holiday... well).

Excuse me if I posted before, i searched and couldn't find a thread.

Very nice Ari! They are very... communistic? No mention of tofu though  :P

Not sure if you're well-versed with the Revolution back then but I'm not, so I don't qualify for much expert opinion.
This one in particular, though, caught my attention. It stood out from the rest in a sense that it was more ideologically charged and poetic.
The last one with the children in the waters would be the most poetic and lyrical one, and if you're interested I can translate it for you.

This one up there is translated as such:

Leading the core of our careers;
the might (or strength) is the Communist Party of China.
Guiding the logic of our ideology;
the foundation is Marxism–Leninism.

Cool stuff. And it is true that the Chinese rarely care about these things. Maybe the older generation who feel nostalgic of Mao's rule do, but definitely not the younger generation who have been westernised.

I got these from a bloke I worked with who came from Northern China.

Thank you Ari and jtoh014 really interesting posters (and how wonderful to read the translation!!!).

Have to say , the one showing people  in rough waters caught my eye. There is something about their defiant look that appeals to me.  thumbsup.gif
