Close Encounters Of The Third Kind
« on: February 28, 2012, 07:28:33 AM »
Was browsing through Bruces auctions and stumbled across a CEOT3K..soundtrack..
Not sure if anyone can answer this question but I thought I would give it a go...
Do any soundtrack experts recall if this LP was double grooved?

While you are at it, can anyone provide more info about this?

"Note that our consignor was a dealer in records in 1977, and they obtained this record album direct from Arista Records, and included with the album was a single of the theme from the movie on a 45 RPM record in a printed sleeve and it has marked on the label "SPECIAL COMPLIMENTARY SINGLE NOT FOR RESALE" (and the single is blank on the back and has no music on the flip side)?"

My first guess would be a bog standard promo single, completely uneducated guess though..remember when you used to listen to your record in private booths before you bought...maybe this was one of those advance copies??

I have a few NOT FOR RESALE records from an old defunct record store.

I would say it was a radio station copy but I don't think so... It may be one of those sent to journalist or Academy members or Grammys (he won for this single) for review...

I use to run a record store on ebay and I haven't seen this type of complementary record before.  I bought mostly DJ lots and collections.  Here is an example of a DJ copy:

Stew, I have the CEOT3K  LP and as far as I know, it's not double grooved.

Charlie, you maybe right re: that single being a radio station copy. A guy I know got quite a few from his friend who worked on local Radio, and they were very similar to that...

I should break out all my soundtrack stuff...  I have a bunch of 50s and 60s soundtrack DJ 45s...  Maybe somebody would "exchange" money for them...  Or posters.

While I dont have any SINGLE SIDED, I have as said a number with a similar NOT FOR RESALE disclaimer and I know the record store they were sent to, it turned into a music instrument store and is about 1 Km from me now. I remember the day I got them. On the other hand my Father bought out a STACK (insert many thousands) of LPs and Singles from a local Radio station that closed down and none have the disclaimer (just to play devils advocate)
