I think I've reached my saturation limit both in posters and money I have to spend. I'm going to do my best to take a small break from collecting. Usually when I take breaks, I "rediscover" what I have later and my collection is more enjoyable than being involved with it every day. What say you?

I've been at this since the late '80s. I have gone as long as 4 years without buying anything. Each time I start up again, I find that my tastes have changed a bit and the stuff I buy is more sophisticated.
Frankly, Chop, you came in here and burned brightly for a few months. That kind of level can't be sustained. Just give it a bit of a rest, and see what develops.

I started collecting around 1971/2, and could only afford pence for something. Usually a Monster mag, or a still. The thing I've noticed as I've got older is, I could afford more expensive pieces. When I started working I was spending on Cars and Girls, which cuts down/out any spare funds. Then it was Mortgages, kids, etc, life seems to stop you for a while, but I've always been constant in what I collected. A few breaks from collecting here and there through life is to be expected, otherwise you may have a problem, or even worse... You may Miss out on life completely...!!
I can quite see where Chop, and Jon are coming from, as I've been there, and while we have a very interesting hobby. Life is so much more important. The hobby is to be enjoyed, and not turned into an obsession, as that would then make it a chore, and you unbearable to live with....

I find that my sophistication of a collector has matured and focused. I enjoy looking for a much smaller slice of the poster market. But when I see a bunch of posters I like, like Bruce's upcoming auction of Japanese B1's, I get a hard-on. So, no, I'm not slowing down, but I'm not accelerating either. I'd say, changing lanes.

How can you see Bruce's "upcoming" auctions? I can only see his current Tues/Thus/Sun auctions.

collecting is like eating food
you love going to the buffett for a long time and after a while you realize you've gotten really fat, so you go on a diet & eat salads & soups until you've lost enough weight to start going back to the buffett again

And then you "enjoy" the buffet more when you go back again.

Though what I meant is the auctions closing this week. The real auction for me is 30 minutes before it ends.

Doh! How long has that been there? Bruce is better off swapping the Upcoming section with Face off ie put Face Off below Upcoming section. Put the money making content up in front of the viewer, not below 'the fold' for many users where they won't see it. If Bruce implements this pearler of advise, I would like in return censorship on emovieposter to be abolished.

The only time I think about not collecting is when I realize that I can't buy everything I want. I say "why the hell do I keep collecting?" when I can find all the pieces I want but just can't afford them... Its like college. It wasn't whether I was going to graduate, it was if I could stand the four years of BS to get my degree... The craziest thing is I have already devised a step by step plan to acquire the worlds largest poster collection just in case I hit the lottery. It pretty much involves a 10 year multi-national effort. I am pretty sure it would be effective and out of the box. I couldn't be stopped. Oh yeah, it all hinges on winning the lottery since I can't sell as I acquire. Since apparently people who sell posters don't want to sell my shit. So once I win the lottery, I would develop the world's best movie poster auction service and simply rule... I already have notes on this... Then I realize that collecting sucks cause I'll never win the lottery, probably won't create a kick ass auction service until I retire (32 years from now), or have the world's largest movie poster collection... Fuck it; I feel like ending it all... But then again I pretty much scored a Pre-Awards Kwai Daybill yesterday which I've been looking for forever... (now I just have to figure out how to pay for it) And the cycle starts again... (still on half allowance til the house rents...; man I need a drink.)

I stepped back a while ago. I may be jaded, but it's much harder to find bargain stuff. Probably because people like me found they could get the right value for their posters by starting their own website instead of selling on ebay or auctions where niche stuff like Japanese posters never bring in their value unless you are a well known major seller like Bruce or Startaki on ebay. Years ago I sold stuff on ebay for $10 each which was in fact worth 20 times that. I got hip to that and started my own website.
In my personal collection I have stopped buying smaller stuff or speculative stuff. When I have the money I just splash out big and get what I want from reliable sellers.

I've acquired about 95% of what I MUST have but I'm still very motivated to get the remaining "MUST" posters on my want list, like these 15, before I can exit the hobby. Some of them (Prestige & Parnassus) are essentially impossible to find. Some of them (SW Birthday, Hustler) I'll just have to shell out $$$ to get. Most of them I'm just waiting to win at auctions for decent prices:
