Do any of you feel that you have most of the posters that you want within your general spending zone, but have reached the point where the ones you are now after are generally priced above and beyond what you are able to spend, or are comfortable spending?
I am at the point where I buy less and less (again, mostly due to Scout, who arrived this past September...she is very selfish to drain funds the way she does), but when I do, its more expensive pieces than I usually have purchased in the past.
Not really thinking about specific prices, as everyone has their own constraints. Interested in you guys find yourself reaching or at a frustration level where you have to save and wait on a piece or simply accept the fact that you will never own a particular poster.
Thoughts? Yes, no?

Agreed, and it is probably isn't a coincidence given that I also have an 11 month old! However, most of my big purchases have come by finding other deals that I could flip and put the money towards them. My ultimate dream poster is $50K+ but it will be a while before I can find enough bargains.

Matt, when you buy to sell, is it via consignment or through your own salesman efforts?
I have sometimes thought about literally calling it a day, selling it ALL to get that ONE big piece, such as the one you mention in terms of price. But that would be tough, and I don't have the energy to go through all my stuff yet alone take the steps to sell.

I've only sold about 6-8 posters so far and they were all through Dave at Cinemasterpieces. They were all biggies though... BAT, Don't Bother to Knock, Niagara, (2) Schindler's List (Bass), Magnum Force (40x60), and a few others. Those sales allowed me to purchase some of the other big titles you see on my walls. However, I'm probably going to put a dozen or so posters of decent value up for auction soon. Not sure where I'll send them yet...

The nice thing of going through Dave is getting a higher dollar if you are patient. Sending him stuff that you are in no rush to sell if at all, is great if you can get the Cinepremium price he usually gets.
Before you send other stuff away, shoot me an email!
Regardless, I am in the same boat. Sell some stuff, build a slush fund of sorts in Paypal, and then unload...otherwise, I need to wait and save, thus being on the sidelines of frustration.

Ben, I am definitely at the point when there is little in the under $100 level for me and most of what I need is either very rare or very expensive. This is what happens when you collect for years as the cheaper material is obviously more easily obtained. My Gambling collection is at the point where most of what I need is pre-1940 and of course on Raymond Chandler I'll be focusing on teh more expensive posters.
however, this is where I'm happy that Heritage offers payment plans so I can bid on what I want, up to the level I wish to pay.

I have most of the posters I have really set out for. I have not bought any lately because I cannot afford the Dawn of the Dead green text or Halloween and a handful of others. Also I am running out of room to hang them. I just do not get the same satisfaction having posters that I love tucked away and frames for all these are really adding up. I window shop often though.

Interesting post. Been hitting a different sort of wall myself, although I do suffer from your symptoms as well, but after putting an unintended fold in a poster as I was moving through the pile I almost had a put-em-in-a-box-and-sell-em-all moment. A brief instant of what the hell am I doing hauling these effing things around for?
Would dearly love to simplify, but there's always that next poster to lust after. I suppose if I could take it down to a certain level and then whenever a new one comes in, an old one has to go out that would be the perfect balance.

The true wall most die-hard collectors hit is when they run out of wall space!
Except for Thierry, of course.

I ran out of wall over a year ago. I just move on to a new theme. Great selection as in what I was looking for in the last couple of weeks. emovie puts it competition to shame.

Guys, the 'wall' is a metaphor, in this case, a financial prohibitive to buying what is desired. But I have a solution for you literal folk...see Mel's apartment for ideas. Or buy a bigger house.

I'm at that point I think. I continue to buy Japanese and advertising posters, but not nearly at the pace that I used to. I wouldn't say that I've hit a wall yet, but I'm certainly running uphill.

Nope, it's just that the people who own the early stuff I collect haven't given up what they got.

I find it is ever evolving and something that would not have been of interest last year now may pique it this. That doesn't mean I am necessarily 'over' what I already have just I have developed a 'new taste' - bit like drinking wine...I have always enjoyed Shiraz perhaps even a Merlot but now I'll enjoy a Cab Sav too.

I am kind of in the same boat as Rich, there are lots of items I need but I can't find them. Probably several are $100 or less items, but they just don't turn up for sale. (I think I've said before for example that Bruce has never sold a single Japanese lobby card for any of the 6 or 7 Godzilla movies, or any other of the early 60s Toho sci-fi films)

I guess I'm lucky (or just insane ) because I'm quite the opposite... I bought something like 1,200 posters in 2011, including some big pieces like Laura (my most expensive poster to date). I started a Bardot collection and I have accumulated 85 pieces in 10 months or so. I pretty much doubled my usual 500-600 posters a year. There are just too many bargains out there. And looking at the beginning of this year, it is increasing. Of course, like Bruce said, wall space is not a problem since I don't display my posters.

This is a big part of the fun. I have standing collections, like Spielberg, Polanski, Eastwood, Academy Award nominated pictures, that I will probably keep working on for a long time. Then there are the new collections, like Bardot, Cardinale, Belmondo, Argento... Lollobrigida is probably my next one. Since I'm a completist, it adds a lot of stimulus to my passion. The same goes with countries. It is obviously very easy for me to find French posters. But now I'm finding myself more into Italian posters. Or even prints. Three years ago, I had no idea what Mondo was. Thank you, Cockring! T
