Author Topic: A very unscientific survey!  (Read 437 times)

In a recent post, Rich H posted that "in the first six months of 2011, I bought 312 items on ebay and that in the following 6 months I bought only 87".

Now I have thought for some time that we at eMoviePoster sell more vintage items per week than all of eBay combined, once you take out the repros, the fakes, the passes, the sales that never happen, etc. And I can't say without looking it up (and without his permission) whether Rich bought more than 399 items from us last year. But I suspect he did.

So here is a very unscientific survey! I wonder how many items those of you here bought on eBay in 2011 and how many you bought from eMoviePoster (just rough numbers is fine).

Now of course Allposterforum is not perfectly reflective of the hobby as a whole, but this still should prove somewhat whether I am right or wrong.

I am going to abstain from this Bruce, as I may bugger it up for you, due to my boycott on buying from the U.S. This is due to the postage problems and nothing else.
I bought One poster all last year from the U.S.

Thought I would calculate up my 2011; I did buy more poster from you than I thought Bruce:

eBay - 222 direct eBay and ~200 posters outside of eBay from eBay sellers... so ~422 eBay (I love to raid unpublished inventory)

emovieposter - 48 posters

heritage - 5 posters

movieposterbid - 5 posters

I love fleBay - the deal is part of the fun.  I don't think I received any fakes this year other than the pulp fiction w/autos but I was gambling on the Unforgiven advance which turned out original.  Shipping damage was prevalent I probably say 10-20% of transaction had shipping issues or damage.  Bruce your packages had none of course.... Rich your packaging was great as well. Heritage packed well but was very slow...

My poster buying has greatly dipped the past year due to our second kid arriving, but for me, I probably buy 10 posters on ebay for every single poster from eMovie.

eBay remains to be the best way to score a true bargain, the best being BIN auctions priced dramatically lower than average value that is fun to scoop up.

I buy way more posters from Ebay than anywhere else.  Probably 65% Ebay, 20% Bruce, 10% Rich and 10% Heritage.

In terms of quality, though, Emovie easily comes on top.  That includes rarity of the piece, accurate description and perfect packaging.

And Rich is not far behind.

I hardly buy from ebay.  Maybe 3 in 2011 other than the Japanese I bought from Hideyuki who only sells on ebay, and those were about 100 I'd say. The rest came from Bruce and Rich, or through private sales.  I hate ebay.  I hate the idiot sellers that don't know how to pack, and I hate the resulting damaged posters.  It's not worth it.  I'll leave picking through the shit to Thierry and Charlie.   Smiley

80% Ebay - it's still the place to find bargains, although 10% of sales are a PITA due to sellers' incompetence or ignorance.   Today is a perfect example - some yahoo dealer sold this rare Rocky 2 advance for $60 on Ebay (not to me, unfortunately) - would have been a feeding frenzy on Emovie:

Bruce you are welcome to look it. I don't think I bought that many items from you in 2011
I got more from you in 2010 than I did in 2011

I did buy more from Heritage in 2011 than in 2010

About 50/50, but I bough my most valuable posters on ebay. I've found that shooting sellers an offer is sometimes the best way to snag a poster for cheap. That being said, I've scored some really cheap low-tier posters from emovie.

I buy more on eBay as eBay has a greater selection of Italian 2F and 4F posters, and that's mainly what I'm interested in. Found a pretty hard to find poster on eBay that was buy it now $100.  Sold for over $200 on emovie back in 2009 (the only one they've ever had), no dealers actually had it (although those who had it on their site has it at over $300).  Needless to say I was thrilled.  The only thing I've noticed about eBay is I only find a real good deal (or something different that I haven't seen listed before) once a month, probably because my area of interest is somewhat narrow.  But it hasn't failed, at least once a month I find something I haven't seen before at a reasonable price.

2011 for me was about 45 posters on eBay and 1 from emovie (a RR lobby card)

My budget on collecting fell through the floor in 2011, however had it not, I think the numbers would have been up but the % might have been the same as I would have snagged a bigger $ item on emovie if I liked it, if it were there. I think on emovie, either not enough higher end stuff was there or I have a lot of what I want... not sure...

Bruce, I would love to buy more from you than I do on eBay - but you haven't had as much material I've been wanting to buy.

I'm a bit under 50% each on movieposterbid and emovieposter.  Only 2 items from ebay and a few from random sources.

However, I seem to have hit that wall again that is being discussed in the other thread.
