After seeing 6 films in the theater in the past 10 days, here's my list of my favorite films of 2011. (Note that there are a few films that don't particularly appeal to me (The Descendants, Melancholia + a couple more) that I didn't want to fork over $12 to see in the theater so I haven't seen yet.)
1. Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy 1. 13 Assassins 1. The Artist 4. Hugo 5. The Adventures of Tintin 6. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows — Part 2 7. Super 8 8. The Guard 9. The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo 10. The Debt
What's yours?

So far Paul and Hugo are tied for the top spot. I have yet to see the Artist so that may change.
As for other films in 2011 that I thought were well made:
Midnight in Paris Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 50/50
Everything else I saw for 2011 films was either just good, or I didn't like. And my least favorite film of the year was The Help (I can't for the life of me figure out why everyone else seems to think it's so great - I thought is was slow, long and boring)

I haven't seen many of the very recent releases ( Young Adult was OK, but needed way more Patton Oswalt), but I'd be very surprised if any can supplant Tree of Life as the best film of the year. Others that were a cut above in what was another very poor year for film: Beginners Cave of Forgotten Dreams 3D Rango Rise of the Planet of the Apes A few that I want to see: Moneyball Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy Girl with the Dragon Tattoo - only because I'm a Fincher fan, the original didn't leave much room for improvement If they hadn't wussed out the last third of Super 8, then that would have made the list. Midnight in Paris is entertaining for while, but has a horribly obvious and entirely unearned ending and doesn't come anywhere close to approaching the greatness of The Purple Rose of Cairo, the masterpiece of Allen's fantasy efforts. HPDHP2 taken as an individual film is simply terrible storytelling - the last several films HP films were. When they reboot this for the next generation, they will finally be able to break from being overly tied to source books and make better films. Heck, they might even go back and use the original title A Wizard of Earthsea...

My #1 this year was Sion Sono's Cold Fish from Japan. Haven't laughed so much in the theatre for a long time. A twisted sense of humor is a pre-requisite though - it's about a serial killer and definitely not family-friendly.

The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo (2011). Two . Brilliant. After watching only the first 10 minutes of the original because I couldn't handle the subtitles (on some films they're ok, just not that one IMHO) it was awesome to see this one. Highly recommend it.

I weep for the future... Sitting back, relaxing, and watching a movie is what I enjoy, not scrambling my eyes all over the screen trying to read a ton of dialog and watch the movie at the same time. Like I said, for some movies, subtitles are not bad, like Mongol: The Rise of Genghis Khan (2007) .

Like hearing this, havent seen ToL yet, but plan to do so very soon. Big Malick fan, so I am pumped about this one. TinTin....so-so, deviated from books too much, and used bits and pieces of the books that made no sense, very watered down. Apes....really good, much better than I anticipated, despite James Franco's efforts to ruin it.

At this point, all I have is a Top 5. The rest I wouldn't rate beyond average/passible or didn't see. It was a very poor year for film.

I just went through my list of movies I've seen and these are all the 2011 titles I have seen thus far with what I rate them on a scale from 1-10 and ranked in order I liked:
1. (tie) Hugo – 9/10 (I didn't expect much from this originally seeing as it looked like a kid's film, so this shocked me. This was an excellent film. Loved the visuals, the story, the characters, everything. It was my favorite film of the year along with Paul. Martin Scorsese never disappoints, well except for Shutter Island)
1. (tie) Paul – 9/10 (I thought this was very funny and loved the references to Spielberg films. I loved the acting, the characters, the plot...everything was great fun!)
2. Midnight in Paris – 8/10 (great film from Woody Allen)
3. Source Code 8/10 (did not expect this to be anything good, but it turned out to be a great thriller)
4. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part II – 8/10 (I thought this was the best Harry Potter film and I really liked the special effects in this one)
5. 50/50 – 8/10 (I thought this was a very nice film. I really liked Joseph Gordon-Levitt)
6. The Adventures of TinTin – 7/10 (this was fun, but expected more)
7. Super 8 – 7/10 (this wasn't as good as I expected and I thought Paul had better Spielberg nostalgia than this did)
8. War Horse – 7/10 (After reading the book I didn't expect much of the film as I only liked the book but didn't love it. I was surprised at how well this was adapted from the book. Without considering the source material I felt film could have been made much better, more like the goodness of Saving Private Ryan/E.T. style.)
9. (tie) Unknown – 7/10 (fun film, but nothing special)
9. (tie) Drive – 7/10 (this was good, but not great)
9. (tie) Take Shelter – 7/10 (expected more, but this was a good film)
9. (tie) Moneyball – 7/10 (good film, but not great)
9. (tie) The Descendents – 7/10 (good film but not great)
10. The Lincoln Lawyer – 6.5/10 (it was interesting but nothing special)
11. Captain America – 6.5/10 (not as good as I had expected, but kind of fun)
12. Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides – 6/10 (just your average summer blockbuster that is worse than the previous Pirates films, but some scenes were fun)
13. The Dilemma – 5/10 (not a fan of romantic comedies so this doesn't rate high for me)
14. Wretches and Jabberers – 5/10 (poorly made documentary, it had an interesting premise but it didn't flow well and was dry)
15. The Help – 5/10 (I did not like this film. I thought it was slow, uninteresting and long. It did not seem like a lot happened and it dragged. I don't get why so many people think this film is among the best of the year)
I have yet to see The Artist which I plan to see as soon as it gets here. I am expecting a lot from that film so I don't know if I'll be disappointed, but then again I've expected a lot from films in the past and they still went above my expectations.

I dont even have a top 3. I did like a handful of flicks but they would all belong on the bottom half of a Top 10. Since I did not see any movies I would put in a Top 5, I have no list. I dont know if that makes any sense and I really dont care. Its almost the weekend.

Quite the 2011 film rundown, Juli. Did you see all or most of those in the theater? Zorba, that makes perfect sense, if I were living in the time of 10 years ago when on the average Thursday night I would have consumed several $0.25 drafts by this time. (root beer for me now ) Looking at my movie theater ticket stubs, there were several films I thought were pretty darn good in 2011. Best to worst....errr....best to least best 1. The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo - great flick, probably in my top 10 of all time. 2. Drive - verrrrry cool, and unique in some ways. 3. The Thing - almost as fun as seeing the original the first time. 4. Shark Night 3D - it is this high on the list because I am slightly biased, since I was a merman in a past life... 5. Rise of the Planet of the Apes6. Source Code7. The Adjustment Bureau8. Mission Impossible - Ghost Protocol9. Real Steel10. Super 8

I couldn't tell ya about shagging methods. Shag carpet is not my thing... Oh you mean that kinda shag. My memory of past lives isn't detailed enough... Now that I've seen The Artist and a few other 2011 titles and my feelings towards the ones I've seen changed a little, my top ten favorite films of 2011 are now:
1. The Artist
2. Hugo
3. Paul
4. Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close
5. Midnight in Paris
6. Source Code
7. My Week With Marilyn
8. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part II
9. 50/50
10. War Horse
My least favorite film of 2011 is still The Help, and now I know exactly why I didn't like this movie: It's too gossipy!

Wow. I haven't seen the top 5 on your list, Juli, and a few others. The BlockBuster queue will be updated. Last one I forgot to mention, X-Men First Class. Haven't seen any of the other X-Men movies, but this one is cool. Who says there are no good new movies? (rhetorical...errr.....all new film/gear haters, please chime in at your earliest convenience)
