I'll be in London from Dec 22-24 and the 31st.
What film poster shops should I check out?
Any info - address, website address, specialties, price range, etc. - much appreciated.
(I'm asking b/c Thierry's tip of Jerry Ohlinger's shop in Manhattan was invaluable).

The Cinema StoreA good range of the latest posters plus some interesting 70s-90s paper in the centre of London (Covent Garden). If you can't see something your looking for ask and they might be able to look in their store room.Price range: cheap to expensive - Unit 4b Orion House, Upper St.Martin's Lane, London, WC2H 9NY www.thecinemastore.co.ukcinemastore@hotmail.co.ukVin Mag An eclectic memorabilia shop selling a range of older posters in the centre of London (Soho).Price range: good to pricey - 39-43 Brewer Street, Soho, London W1F 9UD UK - England & Wales www.vinmag.comTelephone: 020 7439 8525 The Reel Poster GalleryA high end gallery that has an amazing collection of posters plus a wealth of knowledge (they've publish quite a few poster books that are worth buying). I think they operate by appointment only nowadays as they vacated their showroom near Notting Hill a while ago.Price range: are you a Russian Oligarch? www.reelposter.cominfo@reelposter.comTelephone: 07970 846 703 I've bought posters from all three and they're all very friendly and helpful. There were a few others but I think they've closed, Cineart Gallery was a good high end gallery, and there was a great little shop in the heart of Soho just off Lexington Street that was like a treasure trove (can't remember the name tho!). There was another one inbetween Charlotte Street and Tottenham Court Road, not sure if that's shut, will check. Hope that helps, will post any others I remember.

Yeah, I mentioned Cineart have closed*, but I got a postcard from The Reel Poster Gallery a while back that said they're open (at new premises I presume) by appointment only, it says it at the bottom of their website home page as well.
*Edit: Apologies mahmudf, you were right, I had put the title 'The Cineart Gallery' instead of 'The Reel Poster Gallery' in my list... been a long day, have amended my list now!

They are not planning on having premises anymore, I assume because of high rents. My understanding is that they will have viewing arrangements with a couple of galleries.

The "reasonably" priced poster shops like Stage and Screen (Notting Hill Gate) and Flashbacks (Soho) sadly no longer exist.

Ahhh that was the shop, Flashbacks was fantastic, a true oldy worldy rummage through piles of paper and look through their catalogues of snappy snaps photos of each poster. Sadly missed Thanks for the reminder Mark.

Yeah - Flasbacks. I couldn't remember its name prior to getting to the bottom of this thread.
Always popped in, always very interesting, but absolutely never Ever found anything I was looking for from them. Never purchased so much as a photograph.
Cineart was a firm favourite, made a few purchases there. Similarly the Cinema Store and Vinmag.
Actually never been to Reel Gallery and Vertigo I always found the chap too stand off-ish when I visited. or maybe that was just me.
As for snappy snaps, I must admit to doing the same with my poster collection...

A bit of advice when visiting certain dealers, Mel (I am not dissing any dealer here by the way):
Keep your own counsel on certain things. Don't tell everyone everything you have.
I mentioned to one of the dealers listed above in general chit-chat I had a set of Thunderball Door Panels - the said dealer then wanted to know my life story & more, which I obviously did not provide as it was very intrusive. After that day I rarely talk about what I have when I visit dealers and rather talk more about what THEY have. It's much more interesting to them if you want to know what THEY have.
Hope you have a great time in London, and hope you miss the snow!

Thanks for the advice, lads. I look forward to being in the land of the perfectly-enunciated and well-rounded vowels. Geez, it's 10:30pm and my flight is at 9:30am tomorrow. Guess I should think about packing. Now where is that passport....

Why wouldn't you want to share your story? I don't mean this sarcastically but you often confuse me (unless I missed the sarcasm) Aren't you technically a dealer too? And you have one of the, if not the best bond collections, why would you not want to share that? You have a relatively hot girlfriend, nice car. Not to show off, but share and be personable.. I guess that is why I never got the British culture... I guess it also depends how open you are. I get to talking with my local dealer sometimes and I start to walk off without paying him and he has to do the "cough, sooo the money..." You only get one life to share dude...

Back from London, had a jolly good time, mostly hung out with family but took time for poster perusing, especially the places recommended by Ian. Mark Lawd was kind enough to show me his amazing collection, although for various reasons I'll let him detail it in the future. (I've posted pictures of his 41" ET poster separately.) The Cinema Store has an exceptional book selection, probably 200 or so movie-related books, although only a few are devoted to movie posters. It also has about 50 or so original posters, and most of the older posters are high retail, although I did get The Thing quad and BTTF one sheet for decent prices. The BFI Filmstore is also worth a visit. They have the latest BFI posters for sale. (The clerk told me they get 50 or so originals of BFI re-release posters.) They have at least 500 movie-related books. Unfortunately, I missed the BFI Library, which has thousands of film posters. Has anybody been there? Harrod's, the famous department store, has a Vintage Film Poster room. Nice to look at but extremely high retail prices. Here is a 40x60 YOLT for sale for £4,500:

Glad to hear you had a good time over here Mel. It sounds like you visited the best shops London has left to offer in terms of posters. I'm very jealous that you got to see Mark's collection and can only imagine how spectacular it is. Are you hinting that he might be launching a collection site in the future?
