So I was supposed to run the Portland Marathon this weekend (my 15th!), but God was not on my side and I partially tore my calf muscle (which means no running for a month, and no Marathon).  Regardless, since we had already booked the trip, the wife and I decided to go up North and visit Oregon.  I didn't want to be in Portland on Sunday and see people run a Marathon I couldn't run, so we drove to Timberline Lodge for lunch.

Here are a few pictures...

Truthfully, Kubrick actually never set foot at Timberline.  He was afraid of flying and sent a few scouts to take pictures of hotels throughout the US.  He chose Timberline and rebuilt it partially at Pinewood and Elstree Studios in London.

In these last two pictures, you can see he chose 2 different parts of the hotel and combined them for a take of Wendy running to the snowcat.

Great pics, T.  The last time I saw The Shining was when I was a little kid right before going on a vacation.  Must be cool to see a place like that in real life.

Nice!  I've passed by there as well after a day hike on Mt. Hood.  I lived in Portland for a year... great city.

Sorry to hear about your injury.

On that calf muscle tear, I had the same thing two years ago playing tennis. It felt exactly like someone had shot me in the back of my leg, and I literally turned around to see who had done it?  But luckily it was only a partial tear and it healed in around a month, and I had no cast, How bad was yours, and how long until you are back running?

My physical therapist said I should be able to do another Marathon by January.  But you're absolutely on the money with your description, Bruce.  I was training on a 10 mile jog around the neighborhood when on mile 4 I felt like someone was sticking a knife in my calf.  I tried to keep running, but there was no way.  I had to limp 3 miles to go back home.  Sucked!

I had sciatica for a year, didn't run at all, it went away and I decided to sign up for another Marathon.  I gave myself a month of training (yeah, I know, I'm an idiot) and basically ran 80 miles throughout September before it happened, so I have a definite idea why it happened.

I was playing tennis with my son, and when I told him what happened he told me to walk around the court a few times and it would go away. But it didn't at all, and we went home and when it was no better the next morning I went to the doctor and got the verdict (and I was LUCKY, because it was not a major tear, which would have turned my leg black and required surgery.

But my calf did not heal 100% right, and it "feels funny". No big deal for an old man like me, but make sure you follow their orders, because you DO want to get back to 100%, so you can be running more marathons. And if they tell you to rest it for x months, then do so!
