The discussion in "what did you just watch" made me think up this thread. I think this will be fun. Below is the AFI 100 (2007 edition). Please rate the movies you've seen on the list on a 1-10 scale. Feel free to ask people to rate other movies not on the list.

This is what I use as my 1-10 scale:

4 - a terrible movie, but there is at least one good thing about it
5 - a movie that is barely watchable once, and wouldn't care if you didn't finish it
6 - a movie that is good to watch only once, and never again
7 - a good movie, worth watching again
8 - a very good movie, definitly worth watching again
9 - an excellent movie, but not the best
10 - an excellent movie, among my favorites

I am desperately looking for a Steven Spielberg signed letter (especially with Schindler's List content). If you have one I will make you an offer you can't refuse.

Pulp Fiction 10/10 and Blade Runner 8/10?  rolleyes

To me, the only Tarantino film that hasn't been completely nauseating was his first, Reservoir Dogs.

At least you gave Clockwork a 10/10.  thumbup

My rankings on the said movies:

Pulp Fiction: 3/10
Reservoir Dogs: 8.5/10
Blade Runner: 10/10
A Clockwork Orange: 11/10

There's too many on the AFI list I have yet to see to bother with rating them all, but 12 Angry Men is a 10/10. It's probably my favorite 1950's movie or at the very least one of my top 5.

I also really don't enjoy Tarantino. His movies feel... incestuous. Especially Kill Bill. There are so many nods to and replicated shots from other movies that it distracts me. And while I respect its his style, I don't like his "book" method of story telling. It feels lazy to me, but that's just my opinion.

I also don't like 2001: A Space Odyssey. I am a bad person.

Stupid AFI list has a distinct lack of noirs (ok there are like 4).  And Blade Runner should be higher.

Oh, I'm sad to say there are only two films on that list I haven't seen, Nashville, and Do the right thing.  I need to go out more.... Undecided

That would probably be easier... list the movies you rate below 9 and those you haven't seen!

My favorite piece of QT work is True Romance !!! Its one of my top favorites of all time!! I think QT can write a story like a mad man !! BUT no one should ever give him directorial control !!! EVER!

We prefer to be called Tarantino fanboys but I can see why this photo from our last fan club meeting would confuse you.

Lol .. thats nice! Wink

You know one thing I do wish, is that I would have loved to see an alternate cut of True Romance with QT's original ending.. there doesnt seem to be enough "special/unrated/writers cut/directors cut/fan cut" material for this film .. They really didnt help push it to its full "commercial" potential .. Especially after QT had done so well with Reservoir Dogs .. I think this could have been more of a stand out film had they taken a risk with the ending but Scott is a softie for the typical Hollywood happy endings Sad

1.  Very personal.  Juli downrated Singin in the Rain, but that's a movie I watch several times per year.  King Kong on the other haned is good once a decade.  For me.

2. The movies you choose when you are 20 are not the same ones you choose when you are 50, so be careful in assembling your desert island collection.  You may end up with a bunch of "it seemed like a good idea at the time"

3. There is also the repeat viewing factor.  Take The Sixth Sense as an example.  The first time you saw it, your reaction was probably "I never saw that coming".  You watch it a second time to see how the director fooled the audience.  You then read an article on the hidden symbolism so you view a third time.  You pick it up a few months later for a fourth time and what you see is the places where the director took shortcuts and cheap shots.  At that point you put it away and hope it will be fresh again in 10 years time.

A movie on this list should be something that you are willing to sit and watch any time someone pulls it from the rack, and something you would choose yourself periodically.

Oh, and there probably aren't 40 true "10s" in anyone's list.

I see what you are saying. I love Jaws, Pulp Fiction, Outlaw Josey Wales and would give them all 9s.

Though we all do grade on our own curves. Some give 10s easier than others. I think I might be able to muster 30 10s on a feel good day.

That would be interesting.

When I think of True Romance I think of that Walken - Hopper scene. Messed up.

I didn't count.  Sorry, I wasn't trying to pick on you.

When I used to do commercial product development, we would come up with a set of potential features for the new product.  We would then divide them into musts and wants.  We would then attempt to rank the wants on a scale of 1-10.  This is a technique developed by Kepner-Tregoe Management and tries to quantify something that is not black and white.

The problem was that 80% of the wants would be rated 10.  In reality the next step would be to throw out anything not rated 10 and do it again.  However, most of the time, when we looked at schedule and effort, we threw out all the wants and then rated the "musts", eventually throwing half of them out.

Point is, we tend to either like something a lot or hate it a lot.  Doesn't seem to be a lot of middle ground in human emotions, be it product design, politics or movies.

I don't know J, I have quite a few films I would call middle ground. Between 3 and 7, and I bet there is more in the middle ground than the 9 or 10 area.

As for King Kong (33 version of course) I aways make sure I watch it once or twice a year. And this film deserves a 10, purely on technical merit alone.  My tastes haven't changed much over the years, I still love the Universal Frankenstein series as much as I did when I was 8 or 9. In fact I would go so far as to say, if I made a list now and had one from when I was 10, they would be the same. As my tastes have always been Classic Horror, Laurel & Hardy, Marx bros, Ealing comedies, most Sci-fi not just 50's. I still watch Rudolf the red nose reindeer ( Rankin/Bass version ) every christmas since 1966 when I first saw it.    Maybe I'm the exception to the rule...

I also don't like 2001: A Space Odyssey. I am a bad person.

Nope, one of Kubrick's most overrated.

20% of 2001 is a clear "10". Another 30% is an "8". At least 30% is a "3" or lower. One of the most uneven movies ever. Proof that sometimes it is a good thing when producers get to rein in an over-the-top director.

Thats an interesting take. I think we can do that with quite a few movies. Apocalypse Now comes to mind right away.

Rookies...

http://stylec.yuku.com/topic/1921/Here-are-the-Nominees-Place-Your-Vote-for-Your-Top-Choices?page=3

By the way, 'Best' does not necessarily equal 're-watchability'.  I have no interest in sitting through something like Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer or Memory of the Camps again...
