We should all chip in some moolah and divvy the piles up.
They can be shipped to me here in Syracuse, NY.

This could easily start another debate on defining "value"...

Indeed. It will be interesting to see if his 3.5M appraised value will be re-evaluated at all.

As but one example that I quickly looked up-- Heritage sold a Style B SNOW WHITE, on linen (described as VF), during their March 25, 2011 auction, for $9560.00 (inc the BP). That is certainly a little different than Cleveland's $20,000.00 stated value for his own Style B copy.

Jeff

ps- This is not written as a "swipe" or a negative but simply as a price comparative.

AND it begins!  Of course there is no personal poster bias - why would there be?  Wink

AND it begins!  Of course there is no personal poster bias - why would there be?  Wink

Chris.. there are some people who are never satisfied about someone's prices unless it's the very price they wish to pay, or what some donkey who spends little or nothing thinks about what everyone's prices, regardless of a variety of criteria that different dealers and collectors to price their own material, owned by them and no one else. Stuff like this also generally comes from people who contribute little or nothing to the business of posters, or don't even have the ability to post original thoughts on forums and only regurgitate things told them by others as well as the usual pablum. They exist on all forums where even the small-minded can have a loud voice.

oh by the way.. Dwight's evaluations may be high - if you only consider nit-picked auction results.
However, if you consider prices in collector's stores (of all kinds) and galleries as well as other retail sources available on the web and via advertising, the gap between high and outrageous narrows considerably. Dwight's list has retail prices.

Breakfast at Tiffany’s (1961) US 1-S On Linen    8500

Are you shitting me?  $3k-5k these days.

Matt,

I'm sure values will be all over the board, based on various parameters and available past sales records. That is why, as a quick cross-reference and example, I looked up the Heritage price for SNOW WHITE.

Can we agree that generally collectors will naturally tend to "value" posters in their own collections on the higher end of whatever scale they want to use?

Part of this may be in hopes of realizing a profit but I think mainly it is as a result of some level of attachment...

those are some of the issues surrounding how anyone prices stuff. Another factor is the "I don't want to undersell it so someone else can make money on it". Whatever it sells for, you should be happy. If someone else sells it for more - more power to them..

But Rich there is a clear difference between valuing and selling (pricing might be a more accurate term).

As for this Cleveland collection - I may have missed it but is there any sort of disclaimer on where his "values" have come from - i.e. independent appraisal or simply HIS valuations?

I didn't say otherwise

who cares? This is Dwight's stuff.. He can evaluate it anyway that he wishes. If a no-knowledge potential buyer wishes to call in a 3rd party appraiser for his own purposes, he sure can, but that won't and shouldn't matter to Dwight.

I wonder, and have to HOW to value collections, as some may know, last year my wife of 17 years gave me the boot. My posters have mainly come during our mariage. And legally I owe her half their value. But how to get a value? its easy for run of the mill things like a fridge or washing machine, all; the stuff she took, but for me to give a value on what i took, books and posters, who can do it? I can pay someone to value it, someone who has no idea. I can do myself, but do i value on what it might sell for (MIGHT) or what people ASK for..? or what it cost me? all very different. And if what I COULD sell for, does that take into account the hours of work behind the sale/s?
Values are worthless, until sold. meantime, I slog away and sell what i can and send her the $

For divorce purposes since you have so many why not value them at net consignment recovery?  Assume you shipped everything to a consignor, what would you realistically get back?  Would the consigner sell most of your posters as a bulk lot? Factor in the shipping costs to the consignor too.

Somebody else on this board - with a huge collection - told me 60% of his stuff was effectively worthless.  That's the same with me.  The net consignment recovery is effectively zero for low value posters because the shipping expenses exceed the recovery.  Unless you want to drive yourself crazy selling individual low-value posters for $.99, it's just not worth it.

i see some items I have that are not available ANYWHERE, nothing valuable but things that cant be replaced, and others are for sale, for silly prices. I could ask Phil, but then she knows its my friend and i could say whatever value I want.
Anyways, worse things happen at sea. i am tempted to do a blind split and say YOU SELL THEM.

Ari, might be too personal a question and if so please don't answer but is she actually asking you for 1/2 the value of all your posters/collectibles?  Are you being forced to liquidate them or are you selling because you feel "it is the right thing to do"?

Someone needs to appraise them I think. However that sounds like big costs - either through a stocktake or shipping them to appraiser, or flying someone to your remote part of the earth.

Possibly the effort (converted to cost) and costs to sell them may be more than what you'd get for them, and it might take 200 years to sell them.

Giving the ex half of them I think is the go. Surely it would be too much hassle/$ on her end to liquidate her half and she might say just keep em

Thats what i would do too Ari,if your ex is the one pushing the subject i would insist that both your lawyers agree an independent appraiser and have her cover the cost of this,if thats not agreeable its a straight 50/50 and she could use em for wrapping paper.
Vindictive..maybe..but i would also insist she was present so i could go through every single one and ask..do you want this one?? if so i want this one....

actually Ari.. probably the best solution is for you to figure out what it's worth to you to buy out her half and offer her regardless of any values. Then you can just pay her off without worrying about it over whatever agreed time period.. She'll probably be interested in knowing she gets $xxx a month from you or whatever

otherwise, I say you price sticker every item in the collection, lay it all out in one cohesive way in a room and have a "pick-off". I take a $500 poster, you take a $500 poster,  I take a $400 poster, you take a $400 poster,  I take a $100 poster, you take a $100 poster,  I take a pile of posters worth $500, you take a pile of posters worth $500.. until they are all chosen.. then she'll say.. "Ari dear.. what will you give me for all this shit I now have that I really have no ferkin idea what to do with", or she won't and the sale of her material will be her headache

Dwight should sell off all the dupes and let a feeding frenzy happen, then keep the singles to go to one person if he is really worried about that.
