How exactly does bidding work on this website? How can I tell when auctions end? Are all auctions private?
Do I just submit a bid and if I'm the highest bidder, I win?

As in all auctions, if you are the highest bidder, you are the winner.

I'm still not getting something. Every time I try to place a bid, it tells me I have to fill in all fields, even when I already have...

Actually Anthony - a piece of serious advice - MANY collectors have had problems with these jokers and I would steer clear!

Yikes, thanks for the tip Chris... The ones I was looking at were expensive ones too.

What caught my eye, too, were the number of pieces, who pictures were uploaded backwards. And it seemed that the majority of items in the poster/memorabilia section were estimated at 50-80 GBP. Jeff

Honestly, I'm sure the ones I was looking at were legit. But if they were going to be overgraded and poorly packed it's not worth my time. I feel like sometimes my cartoon posters are considerably rare than "popular paper" like Pulp Fiction, but the demand is lower. I wonder if animation ever becomes a more collected medium (which I amateurly predict) if I'm going to be sitting on a gold mine. It makes me want to rush and pick up scarce animated posters, one of which was listed on Cameo. But even if it's very rare, I'd be killed with the conversion rates and or all I know it might be crap. I think I'll pass this one up.

Yeah, in addition to the problems specific to Cameo, you are bidding against people using pounds. After you add in the buyers premium and convert to USD, you are basically looking at double your bid (in pounds).
I'm just pissed as they have some Bond DCs I'd like...

Still, let's not be too pessimistic. You can do very well at these secondary auction sites (liveauctioneers, Cameo, etc.) since there is less competition.

Jeff Jeff, if you are meaning the estimates seem low it's a classic BS move to increase bidding action (and if you mean the opposite well that just shows Cameo is even more out to lunch)

Did you read my link above Mel? I tried that and won $50 worth of posters. They charged me 40 pounds to ship them and threw them in a tube with an invoice. No padding or additional packaging whatsoever. The whole top and bottom edges of both posters I bought were destroyed. Then they didn't respond to my inquiries... I final gave up having to eat the loss. So yes, there is less action... but sometimes there are very good reasons that people avoid them. Caveat emptor.

I try to learn from other people's experiences. For some, taking the chance and dropping $150 on a rare poster from a tertiary market is a gamble worth taking. But quite honestly, for me to risk that much money would be financially reckless. I would much rather spend that $150 on other posters that I know will arrive safely. There are a couple posters on Cameo right now. Two that I've been chasing for a considerably long time, one of which is in my "top five". But if my UK Raiders poster shows up looking like an accordion, I've spent $150 and I still don't have my UK Raiders poster. So I'll watch it come and go and hope the winner finds pleasure in his purchase, but I won't lose any sleep knowing I made the responsible decision.

What kills me is Cameo often gets rare Bond quads like Goldfinger and Dr. No. Imagine dropping $5k on something with their post-auction 'service'! Its a damn shame...

That really is a shame. I mean, it would even be one thing to know they were going to a collector who would appreciate them. But to know the unfortunate soul who does win the auction will probably get a damaged product is depressing. It means there's an unhappy collector, who just as easily would have been you, and it means there is one less poster out there to be had.

Personally, I would only ever drop that kind of coin on a poster I had the capability of picking up personally to save it from their ineptitude...

Reminds me of the story about the postal worker who, frustrated with having to get out of her Jeep in the snowy weather, stuck my poster tube into a snow pile. Then the plows went by and buried the whole thing except for the plastic end cap and a thin outline of brown cardboard around it. It stayed there overnight, and the plow pile froze into an immovable block of ice. At the time, it was the most expensive poster I ever purchased, but realistically it was a rather small figure. I was waiting for weeks, with frequent contact with the seller, waiting for it to come until my father found it when somebody hit our mailbox with their car. I had to use a hammer to open the tube and the poster was more or less grafted onto the cardboard. This was so aggravating because the mail carrier could have easily pulled into my driveway and stuck the tube between my doors, which wouldn't have required more than two steps from her driver's seat. My driveway is easy to get into and easy to get out of, but she couldn't be bothered. That has always been a highlight of ineptitude for me, even though it was the postal worker and not the actual seller. I can't see the word "inept" without thinking of that incident, hence the story.

Jeff, if you are meaning the estimates seem low it's a classic BS move to increase bidding action (and if you mean the opposite well that just shows Cameo is even more out to lunch) Chris.. i was more observing that posters that were newer, somewhat older (not thing like Bond, etc). all seemed to be valued at between 50-80 pounds.. i did see a few that were estimated at 30-40, on the low end. For some, that 50-80 price seemed high, IMO. It was too much of a blanket estimate, it seemed to me. Jeff

Guys, one of my mates is now assisting Cameo in their poster auctions, but for how long I'm not sure. He's a great bloke, happens to be a Bond collector, and knows his stuff.
He is aware of the problems Cameo has had over the years having experienced it himself - we've spoke at length over it many times. Hopefully things will get better.
He's not the sort of person to come onto forums, so if you have any questions I will see if I can answer them for you via my mate. We actually talked about the Hildebrandt on Tuesday night, Jonny. Think he said it went for £1100.
Best, Ad
