Book- "Picture Posters"- Charles Hiatt
« on: May 31, 2011, 03:37:12 PM »
I was given this book a few years ago as a gift. While not a contemporary poster resource guide, it is interesting in the fact that this volume, written and published in 1895, is discussing the history of posters up to that time (film was in it's infancy). The publisher is George Bell & Sons, London. It's a good and pioneering overview of international posters during the age of “Postermania”. There are hundreds of b&w plates, many unusual, American and foreign.

It is a fascinating look, during that time. Even then, posters done by Cheret were already becoming very collectible, because of his extreme use of color and design.

hi chris..

they are all B/W reproductions and photos of early posters, cheret, lautrec, grasset, hardy-- most i'm not familiar with at all.. i will try and take a sampling of some pages.. the book spine is kind of fragile.. but will give it the ol' college try.  ;)

A few random images from the book. As previously noted, since the book was published in 1895, the book contains no movie posters:

Paul, i agree. Color plates would have been amazing (and probably expensive, too). On one of the first pages, it says that:

These copyrighted designs are reproduced by kind permission of "The Artistic Supply Co.,"Amberley House, W.C. The posters, with very few exceptions, are from photographs specially taken by Mr. James Hyatt.

What I also find fascinating, is the last chapter, which deals with poster rarity and value. Even at the end of the 19th century, posters by artists, such as Cheret, were highly collectible, and tidy sums were paid for his works. Some of the most valued, back then, had prices of 100 francs or more.

So it seems that poster collecting has been a vibrant hobby for quite some time.

Yes it's always been my understanding that poster collecting/appreciation was HUGE in Europe in the late 1800s and early 1900s (particularly in France).

Which your book clearly supports ;)
