Mel, wouldn't you agree any software required to prep a digital image to be reprinted can be found in Photoshop CS4 or an added PS extension?  Does the software you refer to artificially 'enhance' DPI in some way?

Alien Skin "Blow Up" is a $250 extension to PhotoShop.  It uses a special algorithm to vastly improve the quality of enlargements compared to the standard Photoshop "resize image."  So if you start off with a large source image, you can "blow up" the image to poster size and you will get excellent results.  I've been experimenting with it - you can get a free 30 day trial period.  As far as DPI, you need 300 DPI for best printing results.  So you need 300 pixels per inch.  So if you want a 27x40 poster, you need to "blow up" the source image to 8,100 pixel x 12,000 pixel, preferably in a lossless format (PSD, TIFF), which is about 250mb.

However, the software doesn't perform miracles.  Most Internet images are too small to "blow up" well. You cannot "blow up" a 200 x 350 pixel image to a decent looking 8,100 x 12,000 pixel image. So if you don't want your image reproduced, don't post a large image and/or make it complex with lots of tiny print and/or put a huge watermark on it.  (Notice Heritage puts huge watermarks all over the high-res images of the most expensive posters - see attached Black Cat).

However, the reproducer could skip the whole "blow up" process by buying an original and scanning it in in very high quality or taking high resolution photos and/or recreating the text in Photoshop.  I suspect that's how some of the very best unauthorized reproductions (Spider-Man recalled Twin Towers, Pulp Fiction recalled advance) are made.  MovieGoods can't afford to buy most originals, so it "blows up" the vast majority of its reproductions from its image library, which was culled from various Internet sources.

Anyway, as far as I know, making/obtaining a usable digital image, printing it out, selling it without authorization from the studios, etc. can be difficult and expensive and entails legal risk - Disney recently sued MovieGoods - so it's less common than we think.

Can you dig up the case number and the court in which it's pending, Mel?  I'd be curious to see the complaint and the actual causes of action.

The real Grindhouses continue to pop up frequently on Ebay and usually go pretty cheap.  The seller assured me this one was 27x40 DS, NOT the 26x39 DS reprint:

I have found a picture of the recalled Grindhouse poster. Here is the link where you can find it and many more posters that have been recalled.

 Wink

Rdavey26, good find.

Also, you should be made aware that the site you found belongs to Mel, aka Dread_Pirate_Mel, aka the person who posted right before you.

Hey Mel, thanks to Rdavey26, I discovered this sub-category of your site.

Here's a poster you forgot.  The movie came out in October 01 and the advance poster was removed for being too unpatriotic.

Lol that is funny I did not know that it was Mel's site. I know a couple people here where I live that has a predator 2 recalled poster for sale and also a Dick tracy poster with Madonna on it for sale. What are these to poster roughly valued at or what would someone pay for them?

The Predator 2 is not worth much and seems to pop up a lot on Ebay.

This seller has been selling the deliberately-damaged Madonnas for quite some time. He claims he was a Disney employee who kept the damaged posters.  I bought one a while back. No doubt it's original but the paper loss is annoying.  He's asking $70 but I'd offer a lot less.

Undamaged Madonnas do seem to be pretty rare and go for $100+.

Thank you Mel. I think I will try and get a hold of the guy selling it to see how much he is asking for it.

I believe you answered your own question ( albeit with a confused metaphor  Wink )...

"I think it looks cool as hell" there's your answer

well... I think a lot of things look cool as hell, but I won't buy a collectable if I don't think that I could at least make my money back if I ever decided to sell it. I used to follow my heart when it came to my collecting and all that did was leave me broke with a room full of crap.

Which means you need to think a little harder before buying.  These days I ask myself which poster I'd be willing to take down to display this one, or if I am willing to pay another $100 for a proper frame.  If the answer is no, I pass.

Still, I don't collect to make money or even to break even.  The deck is seriously stacked against the casual collector in that regard.  I collect to enjoy, and that means display these days.

Yes, I do think a little harder now before I make a purchase because of my current frame and wall space situation. I don't collect to make money either but I don't want to lose money collecting..... I hope that makes sense?? Undecided

I passed on the Tarantino poster btw, I decided to stick to what I know and bought $pendy MMA poster that I have been chasing for a few years.

Is that even an original film poster?  What country is it from?  I've never seen that design before...

Isn't it a NYC Subway wilding poster?  I had one when the movie first came out, but I don't anymore.  No idea where it went.
