Good for you, Stew. I hope you enjoy it...that is, if murder and mayhem are your thing... Last month I swapped out my Time-Warner service for Verizon Fios. Not only do I save $80 a month, but I also get 2 years of free Showtime, which includes multiple feeds for Showtime Beyond and Showtime Extreme. That's where I caught THE COLLECTOR and last night's double bill: EDEN LAKE (2008) and GRAVE ENCOUNTERS (2011). EDEN LAKE is a disturbing reminder why one should NEVER go camping in the woods without a firearm. A riveting and horrific film. It's directed by James Watkins, who just completed THE WOMAN IN BLACK. Kelly Reilly is outstanding; Michael Fassbender co-stars. GRAVE ENCOUNTERS is a pretty scary take on those reality ghost-hunter shows. It's another low-budget, hand-held BLAIR WITCH type. Very suspenseful, with decent acting, atmospheric suspense and plenty of genuine shocks. Lotsa fun. 1/2

It is tremendously interesting to watch films after having children. I will admit I had not re-watched the Princess Bride since my daughter was born. I always thought the line when Grandpa said "As you wish." at the end was some way of telling the watcher that he was the farm boy in the story... (I know, how silly) He was really just telling his grandson that he loved him... I guess until you have a child somethings just don't click...

Just saw UNDERWORLD: AWAKENING at the theater. Kicks ass. Kate is the hottest action star ever. Statues should be erected to her beauty. (I know because I erected one myself in the theater.) The CGI werewolf effects were pretty shitty and there were some 'inconsistencies,' but the action was so blistering that all the little defects are excused. Well worth the money.

That's the reason I won't see it. They had a great thing going for them compared to most modern films when the werewolves in the first were live actors. I'll stick with Dog Soldiers. You can't beat a guy in a suit IMO. Sorry I'm ranting, I'm glad you enjoyed it Ted.

No apologies necessary. Funny, I caught DOG SOLDIERS a few nights ago on Showtime for the first time. I expected better. Not that I didn't like it, but the werewolves themselves disappointed me. A convincing werewolf is a tough nut to execute. Very few films have done so with true success. My favorite is still Oliver Reed in CURSE OF THE WEREWOLF. Followed closely by the first HOWLING.

American Werewolf in London had a great werewolf and transformation scene. Although the werewolf in Silver Bullet wasn't that good, it will always be one of my favorites of the sub-genre.

Loved the AMERICAN WEREWOLF transformation scene, but not the final beast. I did forget to mention the recent Rick Baker WOLFMAN as being a pretty cool final werewolf. SILVER BULLET, too.

Just watched THE COTTAGE on Fearnet through Verizon Fios. Tongue-in-cheek 2008 horror thriller from the UK, starring Andy Serkis and Reece Shearsmith. Quite good. Here's the trailer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OV6R7tXbVlE

Ted, if you liked The Cottage, you might like Severance ( http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0464196/), another British horror/black comedy that is quite a fun watch. I watched A Lonely Place to Die at the weekend...a decent genre film, it starts of really well, then goes a bit daft at the end. Also had a binge watch of the first 7 episodes of The Walking Dead Season 2 which I really enjoyed.

I caught a few minutes of SEVERANCE and it looked good, Tob. Reviews speak well of it also. I'll catch it when it comes back around in queue. Another I saw just a few nights back is THE LONG WEEKEND retitled NATURE'S GRAVE, a 2008 remake of the 1978 Aussie thriller, THE LONG WEEKEND. Also made in Australia, the remake stars Jim Caviezel (PASSION OF THE CHRIST) and is quite disturbing. IMDB reviews are pretty negative, but I went into it with an open mind and was entertained. Had many sequences I will never forget. The descriptions of the movie make it sound like Mother Nature gets revenge on a bickering married couple but it is so much more than that. I'd be curious to see what any of you genre fans think. I'd post the trailer, but it does give away some of the most shocking moments. So don't google it up if you plan on watching.

Took the wife and daughter to Big Miracle. It was pretty good. When I first saw the movie poster I did notice a very similar poster composition between it and Jaws... Maybe not so terrifying though...

FRAGILE, the creepy 2005 ghost film from Jaume Balaguero (who also directed REC and REC 2). Really liked it a lot. Trailer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=13XbdeQ0B0gNow I have to find his other films, DARKNESS and THE NAMELESS.

Attack Force Z on Blu-Ray. No subtitles and they didn't even titles the Chinese and Japanese. I'd never seen it before and was quite pissed when the Japanese Diplomat died in the end... Still wouldn't mind finding a Daybill for it though....

I checked out Limitless on BD a few days ago. Not the best movie, but some very slick cinematography and editing. It reminded me quite a bit of American Psycho.

That is a cool movie. After watching the Road Warrior today, I gotta say I like Mad Max more. Mad Max has more character, and doesn't rely so much on the "rah rah" factor to be cool, IMHO. Both are classics, I just think Mad Max is an overall much better film. Still haven't seen Beyond Thunderdome, but I have a feeling that it's considered by most the worst of the three.
