This is how I feel after about the 4th hour of a Texas Hold em' tourney; knowing I need to hang in there for another 4 hours to win anything (because poker is all about luck and time; to me anyways) and wanting to go to bed...

supposedly it is derived from a pick pocket term. The poke being the target.
Card sharks later added the "r" so that anyone familiar with the term wouldn't know they were in a fixed game.

sound like a wive's tale Stew. Poker was created by a British aristocrat in the 18th century, with a smaller deck - I think 36 cards. Wiki doesn't cover that part of poker history on it's page however so I'm not able to easily draw up the information

It could be Rich,I have no idea. The wiki answer says something about a twenty card deck. What that means if anything,i dont know, type into google "why is poker called poker ?" you may be able to deduce a better answer mate.

Hey Bruce.. got that Italian Meet Me in Las Vegas poster and it's a beaut.
I went over to teh Hard Rock to take a picture of the poster I thought they had (4-panel size with stacks of enormouse chips and dice with Cyd leaning over them) only to discover they had this poster, which means I saw that other poster somewhere else. Wish I had a pic dammit.. I want it

here you go Paul.
I suspect the first 8 shown are 1931 as some of them with that specific logo have the "A" rating

the others are probably late 1930s or 1938R
