I think everybody at studios heard of Miyazaki, but not of Studio Ghibli.  Like I said, I asked 4 animators, 3 at DWA and 1 at Pixar, and only the Pixar guy knew.  I have never seen a Miyazaki movie, I actually own 2 or 3 DVDs that I got for free, but I've never seen them.  I will try to check them out at some point, even though Animes are not really my thing.  The posters are great, though.  I'll admit to that.

T

It's not traditional anime in the sense that it doesn't make you want to claw your eyes out with a metal rake. It's very similar to Disney artwork with some expected Japanese flare.

Thierry, I don't equate Miyazaki with the whole anime/manga thing at all.
Watch Spirited Away, Totoro, Kiki's Delivery Service, Castle in the Sky, Nausicaa...all are insanely good.

The reason the Pixar guy knew is because his boss, John Lasseter might be the biggest Miyazaki/Ghibli fanatic on this planet.  He does all the intros on the DVDs (US releases).

Geez, guy, how have you come to acquire all of these? How long have you been collecting them, and where have you purchased?

They are mostly 60's-80's, I have one or two first release, like the Sleeping beauty. I even have some recent (for me anyway) one's because they have a Euro-Disney Ad on them. Which we all know is now Disneyland-Paris, so a short time period slice of history. And I was at Euro Disney's opening week.

Anthony, As most will know, I've been collecting for 38+ years, but not just posters. When I look back, I wish I'd only collected Posters... Oh well.
Oh, and I've picked them up from Specialist Shops, Cinemas, Friends, Auction houses, Ebay, you name it...

Euro-disney Ad one's...  These are obviously 90's and can be had quite cheaply still.

This Double-bill I like because it uses the 50's art for Snow White, even though it is a 62 release poster.

I don't own this poster yet, it's on my list. I've always thought that it was a great use of mylar (although not as good as the mirror poster!) but something about Snow White's face always seems a little off to me. It just doesn't look right, you know?

I'm pining for this one, at the moment.

It's an actual mirror! I think it talks and everything and can predict the future or something!

Snow White's face has been slimmed down in the 50th Anniv. release. Not impressed, as even the colors of her dress have been changed.  uhno

Cool posters on this thread! I love Paul's Pinocchio quad and Donald nailing Adolf in the face with a tomato!

Cj, those Ghibli posters are great, they look so crisp, almost like cells! I have a few animation posters, but my personal fave is prob the Totoro B1, mainly because I really love the film (thanks again Cj :))

Im glad it went to a good home Tob. It is no doubt my favorite of them all. I still have one in my flat file that I kept away for myself. Originally, one of the two i had was going to be framed in her room but with her growing up so fast and she had this idea that it would be too childish for her to display in her room. I had to redecorate her room from the Disney Princess theme to her likings now since she seems to have that im too cool attitude. She is only 7.

I hand painted this stuff on her wall. The princesses are about 4' x 4', I also did tinkerbell on her wall. I had a glow in the dark swoop that came in from her window and her wings also glowed. It took me about 6 - 8 hours total to draw and paint them with acrylics. Considering I haven't painted since high school, i think it turned out pretty good. It felt good to bring out my artistic abilities again.

Wow, Cj!  Incredible job, my friend.  When are you going to make your way over to Cincy and design my daughter's wall as well?  :)

Totoro is also my daughter's favorite movie...I play the soundtrack for her when she eats sometimes, she loves it. (Bambi, Wall-E, and Kiki's Delivery Service get honorable mention in her viewing preferences as well).

Anyway, here is the Totoro B1 all framed up in her room. She will walk by and say "Hi, Totoroooooooo!".

Pics were taken two years ago when she was a baby...man, things have changed since then. Her room now is a bit more, uh, cluttered to say the least.

Time is a thief, that will never be caught...

This thread has really invigorated my Studio Ghibli campaign which I was intending on starting this month. I've watched very few of Ghibli's films as an educated movie-watcher/animation fan and my attention is long overdue. I can see myself collecting their posters, currently I have no Ghibli in my collection, and I've been wondering since this thread started if I'll collect posters for the US release or the JP release...

I have sort of an unwritten rule that I don't collect posters with text I can't read (i.e. Only English-text), but with Ghibli I respect the fact that they are not American films and I would never watch them with English voice-overs. With that in mind, it seems more respectful and legitimate to collect JP posters for what I expect will be a colorful Ghibli collection.

I don't even know how to shop for JP posters, or what B1 or B2 means.

B1 is 29"x40" and B2 is 20"x30"

As far as shopping for some of these posters. A majority of my Ghibli posters came from Ebay. You can check with a few dealers such as Posteroid or movie poster Japan and even Razin (hideyuki).

Are these measurements exact, or are they approximations? I found a Spirited Away B2 just while doing some preliminary searches ($350!) and it lists it as 20x28 1/2.

Also, are JP posters double-sided?

you are correct on the 20x28 1/2, I said 20x30 because i was thinking of my frame sizes. I had frames on my mind at the time since I was about to place an order for some.

Are these measurements exact

approximations.  since they are japanese, they are actually metrically measured.  if its close, its probably real.  there are not a lot of bootleg Japanese posters floating around, except for Amelie, and possibly Lost in Translation, but not any animation that I know of.
Schan
Thanks.  You know what you did.
