Edit: Old news as usual.

Came across this just today. I don't know if anybody else knows about this, but some woman was selling "THE GREATEST MOVIE POSTER COLLECTION AVAILABLE ANYWHERE" that consisted of seven posters which included:

1. 1951 - THE DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL - 24-sheet
2. 1951 - THE THING - 24 sheet
3. 1951 - WHEN WORLDS COLLIDE - 24-sheet
4. 1951 - THE MAN FROM PLANET X - United Artists Lobby Standee cut-out Kit
5. 1953 - THE WAR OF THE WORLDS - 24-sheet
6. 1956 - FORBIDDEN PLANET - 24 sheet
7. 1954 - CONQUEST OF SPACE - 24-sheet

The auction ended today and can be found here: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&_trksid=p4340.l2557&hash=item5adee4d949&item=390286596425&nma=true&pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&rt=nc&si=LpKwHfNAqMnUvmjkCYEFU0Hra8I%253D#ht_2008wt_905

I know there are some "big paper" collectors here who might be pretty impressed. From the looks of it, this stuff is in absolutely incredible condition for its size and age. How somebody comes across historical wealth of this madness is beyond me, but I envy this woman and whoever buys this collection. I don't have $2million dollars, but if I did, I'm sure I would recklessly purchase all of these...

Its not a woman.  The seller is widely believed to be Matt Shapiro who has a massive collection of posters.  Do a search on here, and you can find lots of interesting information.  It is pretty much agreed that he will never sell them at that asking price.

I see. I'm not sure why I thought it was a woman actually...

Now I feel dumb. I did so a search but clearly not thoroughly enough. Always the last to know things.

Anthony, if you look on ebay, "mrs.miniver" continually has posters shown for sale. Some of these have been listed for years. I have read commentary which suggests he uses ebay to merely show what he owns, as many of his prices are still beyond what most might ever choose to pay.

How about this one (A TRIP TO THE MOON) for a cool $565,000.00!

I just don't understand why the guy doesn't build a website if all he wishes to do is show off.

Adam, I cant say for sure that all he wants to do is show off. This has been suggested on message boards, since the MEGA high priced items are always there, remain unsold, and are rotated through the ebay lineup. I'm sure if someone offered him the $565K for the above one sheet, he would take it, don't you think?  cheers

This is probably worth $100k, but then again most people would not buy 24 sheets.  I know I wouldn't.  At 50k, I'd probably buy it.  $2,000,000 is an absolute joke.  Each time I see Mrs. Miniver's name, I look away.  Way to trash a great movie.

Don't worry Anthony. It is nice to see enthusiastic poster collectors. Whatever we talk about, others here likely will know much more about it. We are all learning. Some know more about some stuff and less about other stuff. No one is better or worse. Have heaps of fun on the journey...  Grin

I am one of those that collect the larger stuff. I have thought about 24 sheets, but I keep thinking...
- am I buying for me, intending to display or look at?
--- Would I then get it linen backed... who does this huge backing, and I could probably buy a cheap car with that money
--- Where would I put it? It is not as if it will fit in my house. Not even sure it would fit in a shopping mall if I bought a shopping mall(!)
--- It is too big to unfold on the floor just to look at. If I or others can't look at it, what use is it?
- am I buying it as an investment?
--- Would anyone buy it from me? Who would buy it. Maybe for a Las Vegas Hotel foyer (just guessing), probably not much else. Anyone know of any 24 sheets currently on display?
--- As it ages, it is slowly deteriorating...

Probably only good for bragging rights

What would it cost to linenback a 24 sheet in great condition?

I'd put that FORBIDDEN PLANET across the outside front of my house, leave out a panel or two for the front door...then laminate it to protect against the weather.
But then again, I am nucking futs...

"What would it cost to linenback a 24 sheet in great condition?"

When I last did one (around 10 years ago, Jezebel, a real beauty) it was around $1,500. Today it would likely be $3,000 to $5,000.

"I'd put that FORBIDDEN PLANET across the outside front of my house, leave out a panel or two for the front door...then laminate it to protect against the weather."

Not on the same level at all, but I had a 30 sheet of Jimmy Neutron that was the exact size of an interior wall her. We stapled it up, and cut out the piece that was over the door and then stapled that to the door. It looks great, and if I had more 24 or 30 sheets I'd be happy to paper all the walls of my warehouse with them.

I thought the person who goes under the name Mrs Miniver was a woman - an articulate and very intriguing person by all accounts.

The thought of a 24 sheet is truly ridiculous for me to even imagine. I've never seen something so large - not even our theatre banners have ever reached that size. My imagination immediately assigns something that size to the lane-length wall of a personal bowling alley. I'm not sure why the image is so specific.

Now I'm imagining Daniel Plainview beating Paul Dano to death with a wall-to-wall Jimmy Neutron backdrop. It is amusing. BRAIN BLAST.

They were and I assume still used on a wall 20 meters from where I lived in Sydney.
I always was waiting for one of a film I liked, then the conundrum. (not that i could do anything, they are pasted up.

I think you'd need a small Aussie army to help you clandestinely dismantle such a huge poster Ari!

I was curious what a restorer today would charge to linen back a 24 sheet, and asked Poster Mountain in Los Angeles. They said they have done quite a few in the past. To linen back only (no restoration, paper fills or in-painting) would be about $2400.00.

I'm surprised such a large poster was released for a modern movie

most posters of this size today are solely for billboards on Hollywood Blvd and Time Square and are rarely used elsewhere. Though I'm certain some other cities still use some.
when I was a kid, they used to have a billboard on the side of the Lefferts Theatre in Queens (the buillding was on a corner, so that side of the building had clear line-of-sight.

Hollywood Blvd & Sunset Blvd however are the most commonly used spots for billboard posters. They even use sides of buildings for posters that have to be square double or triple billboard sizes.
