I have a specific question about quad posters, but I thought I would title this thread so it can be used by everyone regardless of country.

What is the correct way to fold a late 60's quad poster?  In the US I know the changed the way you fold posters in the 70s sometime... I wasn't sure that happened in the UK as well.

I assume it is: 1) Fold in half horizontally along the center vertical fold, 2) fold in half again horizontally, and finally 3) fold in half again vertically along the center horizontal fold line.  Does that sound right?

Thanks!

I am curious about this too... for a quad (also late 60s if I need to be specific) should I see 16 segments or 8 segments as issued?

Harry, you are exactly right, and I bet my life I have opened and closed more one-sheets than anyone alive!

On the quads, the ones with 16 sections were folded an extra time. This was done a lot with U.S. one-sheets as well. This was done so they could be mailed in a smaller envelope, or so they could fit in a pocket on the side of the film reel, and travel with the film.

In the U.K. the posters were folded an extra time, so they could post them with F.O.H. Stills. As the advertising material always went to the cinema before the film was sent. So patrons could see what was coming next week, or "coming soon"... Then the following week the poster and stills were moved to the "now showing".

Regards folding, that is the most common way for Quads Harry, but different printers did have other ways of folding them. So don't be surprised if you find them:- in half vertically, in half horizontally, and in half vertically...  and one more time for postage with the stills.

Hi, Folks!

I would suggest that all the vertical folds happen first ... ie first fold is the central vertical fold, second fold is AGAIN a vertical fold.  This theory is substantiated by the fact that posters are very occasionally found with ONLY those three vertical foldlines.  In other words, they would have travelled as a long, narrow item - 30" x 10" approx.  The next fold would have been the one which produced the horizontal centrefold.  Then, finally, the last fold to produce the 16 sections 'version'.

It is evident when handling lots of quads that the folding rules get accidenally broken and the order of folding varies, but the main body of evidence would suggest that the system described in my first paragraph applies to the vast majority of British quad posters.

Hope that's useful.

Best wishes,

Terry - www.quadbod.co.uk

Thanks Guys. I just purchased a quad (I only have one other so this is just my second) and the sellers pic showed 16 segments and thought it might have had an extra non standard fold or two. Glad to know this is normal. Cheers.

Terry, the ones folded with 3 vertical folds only, were most likely picked up at the printers like that. As I have a few myself that I know first hand came straight from the printers, without going through a Distributors.  I have a couple of Quads that were only folded twice vertically, which also came straight from the printers.

Yes steve quite normal.

to properly fold a quad movie poster

step 1: place poster flat on table

step 2: take right hand and hold right edge of poster

step 3: take left hand and hold left edge of poster

step 4: take left hand and lift the left edge of the poster toward the right until it meets the left edge

step 5: holding the two edges together with your right hand, take your left hand and create a fold at the left side. the poster is now folded in two

step 6: turn the poster 90 degrees to the right

step 7: take right hand and hold right edge of poster

step 8: take left hand and hold left edge of poster

step 9: take left hand and lift the left edge of the poster toward the right until it meets the left edge

step 10: holding the two edges together with your right hand, take your left hand and create a fold at the left side. the poster is now folded in four

step11: turn the poster 90 degrees to the right

step 12: take right hand and hold right edge of poster

step 13: take left hand and hold left edge of poster

step 14: take left hand and lift the left edge of the poster toward the right until it meets the left edge

step 15: holding the two edges together with your right hand, take your left hand and create a fold at the left side. the poster is now folded in eight

you may repeat this pattern as long as you wish, even if you want to keep folding it to postage stamp size to fit into your Captain Midnight Secret Compartment Ring. If you can't quite compress the poster small enough, you might call out to Superman who, upon hearing your call for help may appear and use his super-strength to squeeze it. However, keep in mind that next time, Superman might possibly be saving someone who really needs help or is holding up a bridge, and he may not be able to answer you immediately

Unfortunately there are no real prizes in either lot and just the usual titles that ALWAYS come up for sale.  So feel free to bid away!
