Here is a closeup of the signature in question on a large Frenchie.  I expect a quick answer from you, Thierry, since I didn't use the "G" word.  :)

What do you want?

It's Boris Grinsson, just one of the greatest French poster artists.

PS: Underneath, 120x160 is in centimeters = 47x63in, roughly.

Awesome, thanks man.  I totally forgot to check your site, but I am glad you solved it for me, I wasn't sure.

Noel is incredible, too...man, a collection of just Noel and Grinsson pieces would just kick so much ass.

I'm working at it :)

Don't forget Soubie.  And Mascii.  Man, photoshop blows.  There were so many great poster artists.

But yeah, Noel is fantastic.

Yeah, those guys are incredible as well.  Mascii, man what an artist.  All those French artists are so mind blowing in their skill, its a wonder why their stuff doesn't go for so much more than it does.  You can spend more on some stupid Photoshopped crapfest of a poster in the past 5 years than you might on a vintage French poster by one of these artists, and that just ain't right.  Maybe I should stop talking about it, cause some folks might start waking up to what they are missing, and I am going to start paying more for these...

And I will say, that the colors on these French posters (all sizes) are EASILY, HANDS DOWN the most vibrant and bold I have ever seen for any country's paper.  I mean, these things look like they are almost backlit, in some cases.

yo, wonka, if you're a fan of the Frenchies, you should check out these books for sale on eBay from the Intemporel Poster Shop in Paris...

http://meansheets.com/2010/08/27/ebay-deal-of-the-day-timeless-books/

Also, not to toot my own horn, but my website contains a lot of mini bios on various French poster artist legends from the 1950s-80s (look on the right column under Non-US artists)...

Sweet, thanks for the info.  Will pick up a few.  I remember seeing these, but they totally left my memory until now.

Are they of good quality?  It's hard to wade through the French text on their ebay page...the only French word I know is Thierry.

Yeah, they're great.  Stanislas Choko, who publishes them, is one of the best French dealers, and the only dealer I trust, period.  He published these books a few years ago, and one of them, the Monsters one, was written by Pierre Bourdy, who is a very close friend of mine.  I'm actually having lunch with him in Paris in two weeks :). I've owned all of these books for a few years, and they're all extremely helpful and a great reference.  My intent is to own every single poster represented in them.  No kidding.  I'm about to buy 7 of these posters in the next few days.  As always, they will be posted on my site.

I picked up a whole set, and they are great books whether you're into French posters or not.  Well worth it, and reasonably priced.

T, how does the monster book compare? I held back on that thinking maybe not as good as the Grinsson and Soubie

Gee, collecting all or many of those posters would be just brilliant, good luck

I don't think I have any Grinsson movie posters, but I do have some 1 & 2 panel circus posters he has done. I also only have a couple of one panel Soubie posters. I really need to check out the books and seek more out of these posters.

The pricing on the books is great, and while the auctions say shipping is combined, the US isn't an option in the shipping drop box.

Anyone know what it would cost to get here, or why the US isn't included, or if I should buy now and ask questions later...

I ordered without waiting for the shipping cost (to oz) to be determined. I ordered shortly after meansheets post and then requested total, but it is a day later and not yet have the shipping quote.

Ok, keep us updated on this.

No biggie, but I just don't wanna pay like 50 bills for some books to get to the US...

All of them are great.  It depends on what you want to collect, I guess.  The Monsters book encompasses all the artists.  Noel, Grinsson, Soubie and others.  But like Holiday said, even if you don't collect these posters, there are great designs to look at from classic movies.

As far as collecting them all, it really gives me something to look forward to.  Some of these posters cost $10k and above, so it's not something that will be achieved tomorrow.  But the pursuit is fun.  Just today, I got these two Grinsson for All Fall Down (1962) and Zulu (1964):

Plus this double panel for a French movie called Law of the Streets (63x94in).  I haven't been able to figure the artist just yet.

And there is also Jean Mascii, who unfortunately, doesn't have a book.  I just received this poster for Hell is a City (1960) which is phenomenal in person.

I'd love to concentrate only on French posters, but I have so many other collections...  I love Italian posters, and Polish...  In many ways, American posters are the lamest.

I inquired about combined shipping before xmas and this is what I heard back... Just request a revised total with combined shipping after you purchase.

Hello,
Shipping cost in prioritary registered airmail
would be 28 euros for 4 books and 45 euros for 7
books.
In economical shipping (between 2 and 6 weeks) it
would be 7 euros for 4 books and 16 euros for 7
books.
Best regards,

That Law of the Streets, and Hell is a city are fantastic. What is a ball park figure for either of those?

Law of the Streets goes between $250 and $550 at French dealers.  It sold in March for $160 at Bruce's.  The other one, I don't really know.  I can't find it anywhere.
