Hello! New to the hobby and eager to start
« on: July 08, 2021, 08:25:49 PM »
Greetings, I have a few small collections across a wide range of objects but posters are new to me. I'm happy to have found this place and people have been so helpful already. I've ordered my first movie posters and they should arrive in a few days. Can't wait to receive them!

Welcome, Snapshot!  welcome1
Zowie! You have just NOW ordered your first posters? You mean, we will be with you as you lose your movie poster virginity? How marvelous! I went more than 30 years without anyone to share the hobby with---so having you begin the hobby here with us could be a great thing for you. (I wish I'd had APF back in the day...)

What brought you to posters? What did you order? What types of posters (genres) interest you?

Hopefully, we will get to see "snapshots" of your collection as they come in.

Welcome to APF and the hobby!

Well, technically I've acquired a few movie posters here and there over the years. But, these will be the first ones that I've purposely sought out (and also full sized, not reproductions).

I ordered posters for Luca. It was just such a nice movie that came at a not so nice point in life. I really wanted to get something related to it and despite Disney's strong merchandise strategy, nothing they're currently offering really spoke to me. Eventually I arrived at movie posters and here we are.

My main interests moving forward would probably be in mostly Disney movies. I am also interested in some of the anime movie posters from Japan though. One example off the top of my head would be the Digimon Adventure Tri movies. As much as I didn't like the movies themselves, I thought the posters for them looked amazing. I wonder how hard it would be to find them these days.

I do have concerns about storage/display options, so I probably won't go crazy until I can figure out a solution. But for sure I'll share whatever I get my hands on.

Disney is a great way to start.  So many posters. Are you thinking Pixar, mid 90s renaissance, the 70s/80s slow down, or older Walt Disney engineered flicks?

Mid 90s and Pixar would be my favorites.

Welcome to the forum, snapshot!

I also really enjoyed Luca, beautiful animation, great fun and uplifting too. I watched with my kids and they loved it. It made me hungry for pasta though!

In case they're of interest...

Pixar thread here (needs an update with later releases, I'll have to dig some photos out later)

Thanks, I'll definitely read through those threads. The amount of information available here is quite impressive.

I will say that the amount of poster variants for a single movie can be kind of overwhelming.

No idea what Digimon is...
If Japanese, you can always ask this guy - https://japanposter.co.uk/search?q=digimon&options%5Bprefix%5D=last
Never dealt with him, just saw on FB that he is a foreigner living in Japan and can resource things at a cost.
Crucifixion? Good. Out of the door, line on the left, one cross each.

Yes, they can be. I think it depends on your collecting style too - some collectors are completists and want every single version, others just get their preferred version/s. I think the latter helps your sanity, but I understand the former mindset too!

IMP awards site can be quite useful for seeing variants, but bear in mind they're not that exhaustive for non-US posters and they also add digital only posters which have never been printed:

Thanks, I'll see if they can help. Digimon Adventure Tri was a series of 6 movies and they had rather striking posters for each one. They had small prints that were given away at the theaters but I would be interested in full size posters.

I haven't decided how much I care about obtaining every single variant, but I do know the allure of completing whole sets. The digital only variants are also kind of annoying, is there an easy way to tell what has or hasn't been printed? Like, I'm pretty sure Disney didn't print the Chinese New Year posters but maybe they did and I just don't know? (Sorry for the large images, I'm not sure if it's possible to resize on forums)
