, invited my wife and I to the show tomorrow and we said no.  I just can't deal with that many people and the craziness that surrounds it.  Ahhhhh!

If I was invited to the show, I would accept in a heartbeat. I'm dying to someday attend the Academy Awards. I'd be willing to put up with a lot just to be able to do that (crowds of people, hours of being stuck in traffic etc.). I've always wondered if you can buy tickets to attend or you actually have to know someone special to invite you?

On invitation only.  Also, I've been twice already, and five times to the Cesars (the French equivalent).  So when you get older, you're more like... Fuck that shit, it's much better on TV with my friends.

Having seen all of these movies, I really do think Inception should be awarded for its effort as an original concept and execution, AND Nolan being snubbed for Best Director is a travesty. However, realistically, (and as I'm sure its been said many times in a thread I haven't read through) it's going to be between The Social Network and The King's Speech.

Even if The King's Speech is just the Karate Kid.

I have a family member who used to regularly fly to the US with Virgin Atlantic.
She once told me (she always flew Business/First Class) that whenever she flew over near the time of the OSCARS she was offered a package which included a ticket to the OSCARS.

Maybe you can clear this up, T.
Would this have been a case of Virgin having an x amount of invitations and so wanting to capitalise on this would charge extra for certain flights, providing a 'free' ticket to the purchaser?

The Oscars used to be held at the Dorothy Chandler's pavilion, which is downtown L.A., and at the Shrine auditorium, which is across the street from USC (where I went to school).  In the past 6 or 7 years, they have been held at the Kodak theater on Hollywood Blvd.  I don't know how they used to do it then, but I can tell you that no one wins tickets today.  Especially with 10 films nominated, a lot of people with connections to the movies do not get to go because there are not enough sits available.  Now, the Oscar crowd can be a little stiff, so it is possible that the Academy places a few people here and there to create some ambiance.  It's a possibility, but I've never heard of it.

As the big show nears, I must say that I really enjoyed touring T's Oscar collection at his website.
Brought back many fond memories of days gone by.
That is some collection, T...and for those of you who haven't checked it out, visit eatbrie.com and you'll see what I'm talking about.

Thanks man, nice of you to say.  It is nowhere near where I want it to be, especially for the early years, but it is a work in progress and it forces me to buy a lot of posters I would have never purchased otherwise.

Thanks for compliments.

WOW! I just took a look at the "2010 Academy Awards Nominations for Best Picture" posters section, and I must say what a nice collection. I really like The King's Speech UK Quad (30x40in) - DS/Rolled and the 127 Hours US One Sheet. I also like the Inception posters. I was unable to get any of the previous mentioned posters from my theater. I may have to look on eBay again but my favorite seller didn't have any of these for sale last time I checked. I don't really know or trust any other sellers on eBay with modern movie posters so I tend not to buy posters unless my favorite seller has them.

I was however fortunate enough to get a couple of the Toy Story 3 posters (the one with Hamm and the big 3, and the one with all the toys surrounding the big 3). I also lucked out in getting a poster from The Social Network. However mine is single sided but the one you own is double sided. Mine came directly from the theater, so perhaps they had two versions of the US one sheet?

Thanks for sharing your collection with us, and I especially like how you managed to get all 10 Best Picture nominees among some of their other variations from foreign countries. Bravo!

Not thrilled with Franco an hour in. Billy crystal was the best host since I have watched, I did enjoy Jackman as well. The globes have just been a much better show lately.

I did five years in Toastmasters and gave 35+ speeches.  Most of these acceptance speeches are horrendous. Reading a speech from a scribbled note?  Droning on for five minutes? WTF can't they say ONE interesting thing, like the King's Speech writer did ("I'm the oldest writer to ever receive the award."), instead of stammering out boring lists of people, thanking their family (so what?), etc.

So far, and I'm a little behind because I was watching the NYK/Heat game, it's a disaster.  Franco and Hathaway have zero chemistry, Kirk Douglas (and God knows I love the guy) was hard to watch, it's slow and probably one of the worse shows on record.

So far.

Franco is an excellent actor, but a truly dreadful host. It takes an amazing skill to make Anne Hathaway look bad.

Sadly, each year sees the show sink deeper and deeper into self-aggrandizing shit.
Co-host Franco -- who I like -- was terrible.
 puke
Too many ill-fitting tuxes, bad do's and oogly dresses.
The pomp and pageantry of Hollywood seems to have faded away.

The highlight for me was seeing Rick Baker win his 7th Oscar.  clap

I don't know, she did just fine looking bad all by herself... I caught maybe half of the show, but I thought that Kurt Douglas was the best part.

The school choir ending was unwatchably bad television.

So I was right since November.  Yeah, me!  David Fincher must be pissed, because he deserved it way more than Tom Hooper.  Hooper used anamorphic lenses on King's Speech (a la Kubrick), alas he is not Kubrick and the framing of King's Speech was dreadful.  The acting made the movie a winner, but for Hooper to win the director's award over Fincher was a travesty.  Unfortunately for Fincher, like I've said since the beginning, members of the Academy are 70% above 50 and could not care less about Facebook.

Also, just read blogs and the news this morning, and OMG, Hathaway and Franco are being hammered left and right.  "The worse Oscar night ever" is what I read at least a dozen times.

Really like the Grammys they should just ditch the hosts, let the presenters do all the talking.

I was glad to see Rick Baker win, too.. but when I saw the 3 nominees, the winner was pretty obvious. The other 2 films featured good makeups, but pitted against an amazing monster creation, THE WOLF MAN was a shoe in. The makeup for ALICE IN WONDERLAND should have been in the running, too; this would have made for some closer competition, IMO.

Hathaway was marginally entertaining to watch, although her song was a WTF moment.  Franco looked completely disinterested and high.  He was a bit more animated than the microphone he spoke into
