One of these 14 movies will win the Best Picture award comes Feb. 27, 2011.

Which would you guess and why?

My bet is on The King's Speech, which has everything the Academy is looking for... true story, period piece, overcoming adversity, amazing costumes and Colin Firth, who lost last year for "A Single Man."

I still have to see a lot of these films before I make a real choice. I am hoping of the ones I've seen that Toy Story 3 wins, but knowing how the Academy usually is it won't.

Inception, simply because it's the best movie I've seen all year and I think the academy members will have it stuck in their head when it comes time to vote.

Plus, it has Harvey Weinstein backing it up, and he is the best at campaigning for Oscar.  Heck, he managed to get it for Shakespeare in Love and The English Patient when he was running Miramax.  So now that the MPAA has given it an R for slurring, Weinstein is appealing the rating, therefore raising the visibility of his movie.  At this point in time, no other movie rivals The King's Speech.

I just saw 127 Hours today and I think this will very likely get nominated for Best Picture. I am hoping it wins if Toy Story 3 does not win. I still need to see the King's Speech and a bunch of others before Awards Season. Seems a lot of these movies my area does not get until weeks after the major cities (like NYC and LA) get them. I wish I lived in one of those major cities as I'd get to see many more of these awesome limited releases.

I just wonder if this might be a bit too much of a Brit Pic to win Oscar.

I think, and hope, the Academy will go for a less polished film. Black Swan or The Fighter for me.

Inception was was mind bending, intelligent summer enjoyment.

I think Black Swan was the best film of 2010. Of course my favorite film of 2010 is different and that was Toy Story 3 followed by 127 Hours, then Black Swan.

The last movie I saw was UP. Was that last year? I went by myself and fell asleep 10 minutes into it with my 3D glasses on.

Damn can't join in the poll, I'm with Ari and have seen none of'em.

I do have a little issue with the Academy Awards tho, aren't a lot of the nominations/winners chosen because of their mainstream'ness and ability to market/send snazzy gift packages to the people that vote?

To be honest I don't agree with anything being sent to the people that vote, it's obviously trying to influence their 'x' in the box isn't it!?

There's probably a really good list people (with better knowledge than me) could put together with the actual Best Picture for a year and other films that should or could have beaten them hands down... did that make sense!?

I find it fascinating that so many Movie poster collectors, who obviously love Movies, haven't seen any of this year's best flicks.  Either you're stuck in the past, or you're lost on some island (aka Ari).  Which one is it?

In a good week, I watch 5-6 movies.  In a bad one I usually watch 3-4.

And I see *every* independent movie that is screened in my town... which is to say 0.  I have to drive 1.5 hours to get a decent theater.  Some of us don't have any choice mister fancy Hollywood-insider man!

Stuck in the past, I generally dont LOVE the major releases anyway, I might enjoy some, but to me, paying $20+ to go to the cinema to watch something I would be just as happy to see on DVD later, or not at all, compared to watching one of the thousands of DVDs of older films I either love, or have wanted to see for ages, etc etc is more appealing. I did have fun at Piranha 3D, but I dont expect an award for that.

I really want to see either The King's Speech or Black Swan win best picture. This next statement may shock the world but here goes. Okay movies are basically my life, biggest hobby, hopefully my career. That said, IF The Social Network wins best picture, I will seriously contemplate never watching a movie again.

I have personal pros for seeing a few winners.
I really want to see Aronofsky win because he should have gotten a nom for The Wrestler, and he's a great visionary director.
The King's Speech would be a great winner just because of how superbly it was put together.
Toy Story 3 would be AMAZING to see win but we all know the Academy wouldn't go for something like that despite it was arguably one of the best films of the year.

Inception...well when I went to see Inception I was actually looking forward to it. I'm not a fan of Chris Nolan and this was his first film I actually wanted to see. The hype was ridiculous and everyone I heard talking about it said "it blew my mind!" or "it was a total mind****" but in all honestly I walked out of the theater disappointed...the first time I looked forward to a Nolan film and was disappointed. That said it wasn't a bad movie, I enjoyed it, and I own it on blu-ray, but the hype and the lack of intelligence/attention spans of people these days made it seem like it was going to be more than it was. It was a great idea, great concept, well executed but there was no mind blowing involved, all you had to do was pay attention and you got the movie fine.

I'd say 127 hours is up there on the list and that would be neat to see win as well.

I can't really see any of the others being serious contenders though. If the Academy has proven anything over the years it's that they don't care about talent, they care about political issues, and snobbiness. Good recent example: Sean Penn winning over Mickey Rourke, and The Hurt Locker winning best picture...arg I don't want to get started on that one!

I don't remember the extra number, but I think 65% of Academy members are above 50.  This is the reason why Inception and the Black Swan, while great movies, will be nominated but will not win.  Too edgy.  I'm on the fence about The Social Network, again because people above 50 do not care about Facebook (most of them don't even know what it is).  Although a fine written film (Sorkin will most certainly get best original screenplay), I don't see it winning either, but it certainly is the runner-up in the best picture category.  I could see Fincher getting best director.

I had dinner last night with 2 friends of mine, both Academy members.  One of them thinks the French film Carlos (directed by Olivier Assayas) is the best film of the year.  But at 5:30 hours, it has no chance.  Both think Inception is next.  I disagree and I stick to The King's Speech, which has everything above-50 Academy members are looking for.  I personally didn't like it (although Firth and Rush deserve all the accolade they can get).  It was shot with a wide lens, which I found extremely distracting and can only work if it's done a la Kubrick.

Next is True Grit, my personal favorite movie of the year.  But since the Coens and Bridges have recently won, it's a pass.  The Fighter?  Christian Bale will get it, but that's it.  Toy Story 3, The Kids Are All Right, 127 Hours, The Town and Winter's Bone will get nominated, but since I have one too many, I chose to leave 127 Hours behind.

All in all, I think 2010 has an extraordinary crop of great, great movies.  Many more than in the years past.
