Printer's Proofs: Do you buy them (and why?)
« on: October 26, 2010, 11:56:19 PM »
This is a question I've meant to ask for a while, and forgot.  I don't understand why people buy printer's proofs.  I understand that they are the beginning of the pipeline and rare, but they have color bars and are usually oddly sized.  I think it's pushing the #1 wow factor a little too far.  As far as I'm concerned, they are not movie posters, since they were never intended for theaters.

Thoughts?

I dont get it either, but I sure as hell want that Jaws 2 alternate art style that is floating around in "proof" state.

I think there are two different things here

1. an untrimmed production poster
2 a printers proof is more usually used for execs to approve the artwork or print run

most of the ads for printers proofs are actually untrimmed production posters.

If the proof has unique/rare artwork then yes its potentially very desirable. not sure sure about untrimmed posters!

I think it all depends on why you collect? I collect film memorabilia, and posters are part of that. Some people get obsessive about one particular film, artist, or what ever and to them it is prized more than it would be to me. I was offered a printers proof recently, the guy couldn't understand why I wasn't fussed about it. Horse's for course's.

I have a few printer's proofs, but only because they were cheaper than the exact same theatrical versions I could find at that time.  So, I took a gamble.
Now, I am sorry I didn't spend the few extra bucks because I don't see the value in the printer's proofs -- they seem more trouble than they're worth (size, color bar nonsense).
My two cents...

Just trim off the excess and you have the regular poster!

I think you have one-sheet width envy and are jealous that some one-sheets are one inch wider than yours!

Can you post a photo of the alternate Jaws 2?  That is something I would love to see....

And as discussed before, most aren't printers proofs, they are untrimmed posters.

Emovie just put up a bunch of printers proofs - I'm sure they'll go for $$$ since they're rolled and positively originals but the extra width makes them awkward to frame:

If only Spielberg had had any involvement in Jaws 2, I would have bought that poster, the regular version that is, not this crappy looking oversized barcoded thing.  Does anyone know what it is for sure?

This is probably one of my favorite posters that I own.  Mine is rolled, 27x41in, in absolute mint condition and without the bars.  I'll take mine over this nonsense (sorry Bruce) any time.

Oh, and I only paid $155 for it.

I understand the uniqueness and rarity of the printer proofs but man those bars really detract from many of the posters...
