"But the cinema projectionist got a shock after contacting the original distributor, when he discovered late fees for the film have mounted over the passing decades to more than £43,000 in today’s money.

Universal Pictures, which now owns RKO, has told cinema bosses it is willing to waive this fee to have the prestigious film reel back in its prized collection."

Gee thanks Universal!  - I would like to see them try to collect on that regardless.

A cool story nonetheless Stew...

Its a refreshing change to the usual "Pregnant junkie mother with 6 kids, robs 85 year old of bus pass" headlines.

too bad it is only a reel that the theatre had lost in 1933 as opposed to a reel with the missing footage of the spider sequence.

oh.. more news.. the found reel was just stolen by a pregnant junkie mother with 6 kids

Not many specifics in that article, The original 33 release was 10 reels long. did they find one of them, or was full film spliced together in a large tin?

It was just one reel. Also the term missing makes it seem a treasure of a find such as lost footage but i think the term unreturned is more appropriate.

I must admit if I found anything in a theatre, it would be in my collection regardless. This is maybe why I haven't worked in one :-\

I am not understanding. Does this contain even one frame that is not already in the existing prints? It sounds like they are saying that had they found all ten reels instead of one, it would have had the missing footage, which leads me to think this is more pathetic media hype of a non-event.

This would be my guess.  They found one of the ten reels and are trumping it up to get more media coverage

But let's be fair - none of us have found an old reel from King Kong (amazing really) and, as far as I know, neither are any of us restoring an old theatre so it can be enjoyed again...

If you need publicity for something like that - I say go ahead!

@ Bruce,
Its on celluloid film stock and not nitrate,so my guess its from the 50`s re release.
