Best way to sell collection
« on: January 14, 2019, 11:35:58 PM »
For those who have experience selling posters;
I have a large collection of posters I have gathered over the past 30 years. Mostly daybills and one sheets from both the US and Australia collected from reputable dealers across the world. I have the ability to build a website but it will take time to complete and as I will not likely purchase any more for sale eventually it will be obsolete and only remain as an archive for what I once had!
The only other ways I'm aware of are; Ebay, this forum, and consignment.
I'm interested to know members thoughts on the pros and cons for these selling options.
I have 200-300 posters in my collection that I'm looking to sell for a "fair" price, I'm not looking for inflated or over the top prices.
Thanks in advance!

Hi Mat,
Best thing to do in my opinion is get a list ready and post to people who want it then you can individual discuss price and at least you'll be happy getting a price you agreed on.
Selling on EBay or consigning can get you good prices however there's a risk that you don't get what you want.

There's always fixed price consigning, some sellers do that and if you are happy waiting for the right price it can be beneficial.

If you have a list please email me at info@timelessmoviemagic.co.uk and I can see if you have anythi g that I'd like.

Thanks
Marc

I'd chuck the whole thing over the fence to Bruce and co.

This if you really don't have the time, or want to dedicate the time, to a host of BINs on eBay that, once exhausted, you then have to auction with higher start prices, that once exhausted, you start from 99c.

Also, building your own website is all well and good, but Bruce and the likes already have large audiences with a top notch reputation.  You will be an unknown - if indeed people can find your website.

Heritage will take it too but I believe they need an aggregate value of $5k before they will take anything on.

Where are you based?

Listing and selling pieces is also not that difficult, if you have the time, and also dont want anyone taking a chunk of the pie. With GOOD photos, clear, sharp, well lit and good descriptions, of pluses and flaws, you can either list as BINs or auctions and see what may come that way, too.

Options... always available options. :)

what kind of material is it?
if there is a preponderance of high value items, you have to go to Heritage.

Thanks for all the advise!
I'm located on the west coast of Canada and am in the process of packaging in polyethene sleeves and listing.
I think I will make the list available to any one on this forum ,should they ask, and then start listing on ebay.
The most valuable poster I have would possibly be a "Psycho" daybill in very good to fine condition?
Thanks again guys!

Rich, what do you consider the high value cut-off point? $500? $5000? Is it worth sending a collection with mainly $100-200 items to Heritage or is the expectation higher?

I'd say a collection with many $500+ items is Heritage meat and there are reasons for this cut-off

factually, HA's primary focus is the Signature auctions. So their methodology is "you have items we'd like to sell in the Signature auction, so we are happy to sell stuff for you in our weekly auctions". It's the carrot at the end of the stick and a smart 'trade'.

although I'm sure they would be happy to take a collection that loads of items $100+, they would just never get into a Signature auction and you are subject to the same vagaries of time as any other auction filing stuff in with the many consignors they may already have on a weekly basis, including myself

Thanks, very useful! My previous collection culling consisted of mostly $20-$200 items which Emovieposter handled very well. When I feel ready to sell some higher-level items I'll be sure to give Heritage a look.

Or, one could reward EMP's handling of the initial raft of items with a second raft?

Yes, that is quite possible too!

Sooo,
I've finally got part of my collection, roughly 150 daybills packaged and listed. Where should I post the list on this forum?
Thanks guys!

Hi Matt,

From what decades are your posters?  I'm certainly interested in original Universal horror and similar.  Okie

These daybills range from 1950's-1990's across all genres.

Hey Matt, post the list in the F/S board that's just for collectors to sell on:

Looking forward to seeing what poster goodness you're deciding to sell.

Thanks,
I noticed lists are not welcome, only with pics. I have pics but posting 150 pictures is not ideal.

Just post the list mate.
That rule is ridiculous - if certain people here take it down then more fool them.

Never understood that rule....

It's the "If you don't post the photo then how do we know you own it" mentality.
Best wishes,
Adam
