Book on 1980s Horror Advertising
« on: December 27, 2018, 05:40:53 AM »
Not strictly posters, but close enough: Michael Gingold, a former writer and editor at Fangoria, has put together this hefty tome compiling (mainly B&W) US newspaper ads for 1980s horror movies. In many cases, the ads used the same art or imagery as the respective one-sheet, but some of the ads were unique for print advertising. I had a flick through this on a recent US trip and it’s a nicely put together trip down memory lane and is a pretty comprehensive run-through the key genre films of the era. (I probably would have bought it, too, but weight /luggage restrictions gave me pause!)

Here is a link to the relevant Amazon listing: https://www.amazon.com/Ad-Nauseam-Newsprint-Nightmares-1980s/dp/1948221055/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1545906894&sr=8-1&keywords=gingold

Thanks for the tip, Mardukas.  Looks like NYC for sure played a factor or two more of horror movies than Oklahoma City or Wichita where I mainly chased film!  Okie

I guess the grindhouses, where some of the less reputable horror flicks might have played, were still going on New York's 42nd Street, at least in the earlier part of the 1980s?
I grew up and live in the UK, where the issue was more censorship than availability in those days.
