Black Swan - Limited Edition International Teaser Art
« on: October 15, 2010, 04:34:44 PM »
Empire magazine has run a story on these limited edition international "Black Swan" teaser posters.

http://www.empireonline.com/news/story.asp?NID=29205

I'm so looking forward to this film, so much so that I'm travelling back to the UK next week, and will see the film at the London film festival. Attending an Aronofsky masterclass interview the following day.

I'll post a review in a couple of weeks.

Those are some sweet posters, and I love Aronofsky, but I'm having trouble getting excited about a drama about ballet.  I will definitely see it though, and hope my preconceptions are misguided.

Thanks.  You know what you did.

Exceptional design, given. But the Art Deco styling has no link to the film in question, in tone or concept. The American 1-Sheet is much more representative of the actual film.

Beautiful to look at, but a little confusing as a campaign IMO.

That's funny, because it just about describes every Polish poster ever done!  These could just as easily have been part of the Polish campaign for the film.

I could see Alamo/Mondo doing posters like these, except they'd probably be 9"x15" giclees or some other ridiculous tiny size.

Anway, let's hope we'll see more artistic posters like these and few Photoshop montages.  I may bring these into the office.

La Boca Design in London did these.  Another of their designs:

I love those art deco images better than 99% of the stuff coming out of Hollywood, which is probably why I have a fondness for Polish posters

Glad to see he came through.  I just settled up for my set too.

I have to say, though, while like the concept of the other posters, the US release is my favorite.
Best regards,

Agreed, I prefer the American poster for this film.
With regards the Art Deco release, I've ordered the British Quad versions which I think are far better proportioned, although only a set of 3.

Grief - what a supremely wonderful set of posters for this film.  Wonderful designs, all.

I am surprised though that the font or logo design for the film title itself was not standard across all posters.  Am I correct in thinking that this is the one area that is uniform across all territories?

Hello Simes,

You are partially correct with regard to the use and choice of the logotype but it's normally only the case with the big studio 'tentpole' releases. With something like Iron Man 2 or Harry Potter which rely upon additional merchandising deals (from fast food chains to toys), the use of a standardized logotype is somewhat more important in maintaining a consistent branding across all promotional platforms that can be instantly linked back to the film it seeks to promote.

The use of the image is more flexible depending on which territory we are dealing with. Sometimes certain actors/characters (when referring to a multi cast line-up like Oceans 11) are more popular in one part of the world than in others so their prominence on a poster is dictated by what the market research comes up with.

As for something like Black Swan, there is substantially more freedom to create an advertising campaign more intune to individual territories because it's not as restricted by the aforementioned merchandising deals.

There is obviously a lot more to it than this simplified description but the bottom line is that the entire campaign for Black Swan is one of the better and more interesting used this year and I'm definitely looking forward to seeing it.

Paul.

These are all great posters.

My favorite is this quad, which is the only one I got so far.

I may get the other quads, but I'm not entirely crazy about them.  Personal taste.  For this series, though, I find the quad format much more appropriate than the OS format.  Again, personal taste.  On the one I got, I like how they centered the title within the artwork.

Thanks Paul,

Points noted, but the 1 sheets are all for the same territories, are they not?

Agreed with the stunning campaign assessment.  Very arresting.

If you get a chance, try to grab one of these international posters before they're gone.  There are still a few floating around on US and UK eBay.   I put this one up in my office and it's getting lots of compliments, even from people who normally have zero interest in posters.
