Your Favorite Cinerama Poster
« on: October 01, 2010, 01:19:27 PM »
Im planning on owning at least one poster featuring the infamous logo, so it made me wonder if any other members have a particular fond favourite or even some examples that may whet my appetite ?

I buy posters for this sort of thing myself. I especially like the ABC logo's with the names of the town the film was showing at on them, even the Cinema managers announcements, and specials.

I don't know why.. but I am drawn to posters with the UFA logo

maybe I like it because it's the same abbreviation for U F*cking A$$hole
or maybe I just like vintage German films with subtitles

I don't know yet.. still trying to find the answer

Stew, I'd recommend either 2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY or CLEOPATRA.  I am pretty sure both of these titles went Cinerama....

I can sell you a nice Cinerama-stamped table-top lenticular for 2001!

As for US paper with the Cinerama logo... there is a lot of it.  Styles A, B, C of the 1-sheets all have Cinerama variants (In fact I think C is only Cinerama), as well as the 3-sheet and 6-sheet.  Expect to pay about a 25-50% premium for the Cinerama logo though...

I have a couple......not really the same logo, but it means the same thing.  I'm not positive, but I dont remember any of the US/UK posters for ISZ having the Cinerama logo. I agree with the 2001 pick though.  I think its probably my favorite.

Spotted this rare 2001 Style C poster in Heritage's past auctions.  It was used only in Cinerama theaters. It is an illustrated poster, by the way, not a photograph.

here's something I picked up, not in the greatest shape but cannot find any other copies like it.  Looks like a Cinerama release for How the West was Won, but rather than a general Cinerama, it looks to be at the theatre level, that being the Empire at 41 avenue de Wagram in Paris.  According to this it was demolished in the mid-2000’s.

Not sure if this would be first release or a later 70s release, the article here mentions that it played both releases for a long time

That's a very good looking poster and what a great read on the history of that theater. It sounds like it looked amazing inside, too.

Too bad it was torn down, in favor of a hotel.  :-[

And I like that "seances" were held at certain times, during the screeing of this movie, too.  ;D

re "seances" i think in this case they're using it in the sense of showings or screenings, so no spooky ouija stuff.  But thanks Jeff.  As far as you know, is it common to have theatre-specific poster printings?  Reading on wikipedia maybe its a first release for HTWWW afterall.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cinerama (SEE THE LIST)

Also looking at other French releases from the original Cinerama, the font seems closer to my version than the later RR

I know.. i was just joshing about the seance part, Vick..LOL

I know that others here have posted theater-specific Cinerama posters for the theater here in LA, so I think it could certainly be a first release poster that was shown in the Cinerama venue.

Not sure if this means anything, but on the poster, lower left, (that you took a snap of), where it says "Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer et Cinerama" in the cinerama logo style, certainly could suggest that this poster was for a first release screening, too.

Did you try and find anything out about the printer and when they were in operation? Looks like G. Cravenne in Paris.

It's great art, too. The montage lets you know exactly what the subject of the film is about.
