Aloha! New Collector...Maybe?
« on: March 02, 2017, 12:41:38 AM »
Aloha,
I wanted to stop by and just give a quick introduction. My name is James, I currently live in HI and don't have any posters to speak of yet. I am looking for my first poster,  the original Pulp Fiction One Sheet (not the recalled Lucky Strike Version). The problem is that I have seen such drastic prices differences in what looks like the same poster that I am just not sure what I should be looking for. I am looking for a reputable seller and hoping you guys could point me in the right direction. In the future I would love to add a some OT Star Wars One Sheets and maybe a few others from my favorite movies from the 80s and 90s. I also have some interest in WWII recruiting posters.

Thank you again for the add!

James

First,  welcome1 James, and happy that the registration went smoothly.

You will find many helpful folks here that can point you to various sellers or dealers to guide you in your Pulp Fiction search. Rich (aka MoviePosterBid.com) is a dealer here and a Pulp guy, too. So are others, fellow collectors, who can help point you in a direction of where to look and who to trust and buy from.

Same goes for your Star Wars and WWII poster searches. Feel free to ask and post whatever comes to mind.

And enjoy the forum, too.

Jeff

Hi there James. Welcome to the forum. You WILL like it here. (And I'm jealous of your place of residence. Which island?) Check the auctions for the PULP FICTION / STAR WARS posters. Avoid eBay. As a newbie you should be warned that there are unscrupulous dealers on eBay selling fakes. Know who you are dealing with first. Look around. The site here has LOTS of info and great people who will help you out. Just ASK!

Good luck on your quest and WELCOME aboard.

Thank you for the warm welcome! I am on Oahu. It's very nice here and I can't complain but Island fever is a real thing! I will check out the auctions. I plan on avoiding eBay at every expense.

Posters aren't the only things counterfeited and ebay has some "protections" against that like feedback scores and dispute resolution, etc.  Also, paying via paypal is a good way to ensure you have an added layer of "buyer protection."

Poster specialists and auction sites are great, but there are definitely good deals from trusted sellers to be had on ebay.  You just need to get a bit of experience, look at the signs and ask questions. I'm sure everyone on here has scored a wicked deal via ebay many times.

Cinemasterpieces is one of a very few top tier dealers.  If it isn't in stock, they will likely know how to find what you are looking for.  You will pay top dollar, but you won't have to do any legwork, and you can be assured that the poster they provide will be genuine and at least condition 8 of 10.  If this is the level of service you want, then this dealer is for you.

From there, you head down into the pile of auction sites, other dealers and ebay.  At this point, you are trading a lower price against an increased risk.  You need to know more about the paper the lower you head into the pile.

The next level down is the poster specialty auction houses.  At this level, you are competing against the knowledgeable collectors as well as the dealers.  There are bargains to be had, especially if you are willing to accept a lower condition item.  The C7-10 items though are going to go for prices that rival the better dealers.  I generally work with 4 auction sites, and find they follow a set order in quality and prices realized.  At the top is Heritage.  Generally high quality and highest winning bids.  Next is emovieposter.  Third is mpb.auctionand about equal to rich is movieposterexchange.

With all of the auction sites, you need to be patient.  It may be months or years before they offer something you are looking for, so you need to collect in broad categories, say 80s comedies, or 50s monsters.  If you are only looking for a few titles, I find you will get bored and stop attending.

When you drop below this level, you start running into fakes and reproductions.  There are known pirates and you can find references to them here.  There are general classes, so you need to know the terms like 'minty white' or 'hairy belt' or 'little stick man' for some posters.  You need to be aware of exact sizes as pirated stuff may be a fraction of an inch off.

Once you are educated, you can finally head into the ebay jungle and have a fighting chance of coming back alive.  Yes, I have gotten bargains on ebay, but I have also been burned by stuff being misrepresented in condition and once by a video poster that had been cropped and matted to hide the fact.  Count on being burned at least a few times if you frequent ebay a lot.  Put it down to the cost of finding that elusive bargain.

James, ebay is not as bad as all that, imho.

A large part of my collection has come from ebay and we are talking posters from as early as the 1920s and upward, from sellers both here in the US, as well as EU, Japan and South America. Ive never gotten a repro that was represented as the real deal etc (knock on wood).

When going thru ebay sellers, always look at their feedback and comments, too.

It is true that a good handful of more modern titles have been bootlegged and are sold by scammers like tloce, who is discussed in his own thread here on the forum. Just be patient, read the descriptions carefully, and ask sellers questions if you have any, before buying.

And as others have said, if you do get something that isnt as described, ebay and Paypal have a money back buyers guarantees (Buyer's Protection) in place, that will refund you of both your purchase price and initial shipping cost, if need be.

Welcome to APF James.
The auction sites are always great and Ebay can be a treasure trove at times.
I am always finding bargains at all of them.
Just learn about what you are looking for and heed the advice of APF members (who know more about this hobby than most).
 cheers

I was just thinking of  tloce. He has GREAT feedback, but I am sure the majority of it are from people who do not realize they've been ripped off. So even with those "protections" in place, people are still being sold bad goods. BUT, you are certainly correct that there ARE reputable dealers there. I STILL buy there myself. As a new poster buyer though, don't go thinking you've got a great deal on a mint "original" STAR WARS unless you KNOW who you are buying from.

Thank you for the warm welcome and the information thus far.

I am sure there are some great deals to be had on Ebay but I am just not sure I am at the point where I can judge a poster and make sound purchasing decisions, especially on a Pulp Fiction poster. I am not 100% sure how much actually collecting I am going to do. I know that the Pulp Fiction poster is going to be a display piece and I might end adding a few more down the road. I am interested in some vintage Michael Jordan Posters and am seriously thinking about placing an offer on this http://www.ebay.com/itm/142274650411?_trksid=p2055119.m1438.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT It's the "Wings" MJ poster from 1989, original and factory sealed. I grew up a Bulls fan and like many Idolized MJ. This "Wings" poster is probably my most coveted poster and to find one still factory sealed is like a dream come true.

Thanks again for all the help.
James

Read a bit on this site.  It appears that tloce knows how to work the system and get negative feedback erased.  He will refund when people call him out in exchange for removal of negative feedback.  He also seems to have a successful routine in place for appealing negatives back to eBay.
