Another Backing Approach
« on: October 14, 2016, 09:29:33 PM »
I came across the clip on youtube, and this guy's method of backing is a little different than what is considered the norm and standard way to back a poster. He's located in St. Paul, MN. If nothing else, it makes for an interesting watch.

Did he mount it directly on a bed sheet?

I agree... Kevin Costner posters can be experimented on for backing

Yeah, he put the wheat paste directly onto that cotton material he bought. The poster would be offering more support than the backing, and not even any japanese masa paper in between the poster and the fabric.

I think something like this would be easily damaged, and might also sag in a frame, unless supported by the backing board somehow. Dunno tho.

But doesnt the European style still used a linen backing? I know in the UK the linen is sometimes a thinner type, but it isnt just a cotton material (like cotton sheet material) that has been washed with ammonia, like the guy in the video used.

I have one poster that was backed in the "European style," and it had no retouching done to it, aside from it being backed (and the linen backing is not soft or flimsy at all). It was simply backed to conserve it, leaving any historical blemishes and "life-bumps" intact and visible.

I have a few that are very thin, as thin as a sheet, (you could still fold them easily) maybe they are not the norm, I assumed they were.

Ahhh, so that Black Swan of yours was backed European style? Unbacked it wouldn't have been warm enough ;-)
